I can't fight it Kelly, at least not legally. I simply do not have the kind of time and energy it takes to be involved in a lawsuit. I fought one after another for over 20 years when I was working and I can't start that stuff over again. Hundreds of thousands of my dollars have been spent on lawyers. No , make that millions, the last guy got 3.2 million. I can't do it, just can't. I am a basket case right now and they haven't even fired the lawyer round off yet. She actually told me in the letter that if I was going to keep the roosters, I would need to get them "de-crowed."

Michael is out there right now turning the coops into dark, dreary dungeons.

really, try the collars!! It makes them make little squeaks, but they are just as proud and happy and the hens still respond. I cant link the video, because I couldn't copy it fb. (( hug hug))

Amazingly, this is all it took to solve my crowing problem. To make cut breathable fabric a couplw inches wide and long enough too fit the rooster with at least a finger's width between the collar and neck. Hot glue or sew the velcro in two strips with a 1/8 " gap between.


For chicken friends making these, be sure not to make the collar too wide. You don't want a neck brace. Also, it works best if the velcro runs the whole length of the collar ( in narrow strips) so when it is on the rooster the velcro keeps the collar from stretching when he expands his throat to crow. It's also important to make the velcro strips narrow and leave a gap between each strip so the rooster's neck can bend and move easily.

Well I thought I had seen it all...I ain't putting no collar or sec rowing my boys for no ****** body....I hate the fights too Mary but I not putting mine in dark dungeons or inhibiting them from being roosters because of a snotrag across the road. You're legal.....make them prove their BS including health issues or zip it. How ridiculous. You need no lawyer to fight for you on this one....you are legal so let them pay to play their game.

I have my county/state ordinances as well as copies of my subdivision (well, it's barely one, really) covenants ready to print out in case some of my long time elderly neighbors kick the bucket and some citified idiot moves in nearby. You know the type-the ones who think dog and cat feces don't stink and that dogs barking isn't noise pollution and that roosters should never crow in the country. I'd print out a copy of the zoning for your property and send it to each of the signers on that letter with a two word note that says simply "Case Closed". The phrase "gated community" speaks volumes.

FWIW, I would never put one of those things on any of my roosters, either, though I know chiquita is just trying to help. Something is just really wrong when the first thing that happens in a situation where the chicken owner is well within his/her rights in a complaint case is for folks to start suggesting how that chicken owner can make concessions to the complainants. Why do we always have to be the one to make adjustments in our lives when maybe they ought to just move to a sterile community where no property owners are allowed to have poultry?

WEll here is what we ended up doing. The fronts of the coops went from this:



To this today:



The fronts are four inches thick with plywood. There is insulation between the sheets of plywood. All the edges are caulked.

This back got 4 ft by 1 ft windows cut out and covered with hardware cloth. I made flaps to close if the rain is pouring in that direction. They used to look like the coops to the left.



The plan is to insulate the inside of the metal roofs which needs to be done anyway as we get condensation. Then we will out in small ventilation fans in each coop in that space above the flap.

Didn't get it all done today but we'll keep working on it. I have some minor surgery being done tomorrow so I will be out of commission for a couple of weeks.

I am anxious to see how the crowing sounds tonight with just what we did today. We initially had the fronts partially covered but it didn't make much difference because we left large areas open for ventilation.

Anyway, I appreciate all the advice and I understand that many people wouldn't change a thing. That isn't an option for me. I am going to do what is reasonable to mitigate the "nuisance" and then stand up to them with zoning arguments. I should have the backing of the county if animal control was correct. I just never want it to get to that point. I am sick of fighting. I want this part of my life to be in peace. I have spent too many hours in courthouses and lawyers offices to start that again.

I live in a City that allows 6 hens but no Roosters.

Of course I would never put one of those collars on one here either. My Roosters go to live on the egg farm.

That is like asking "which came first, the chicken or the egg?" Though logic says it's the crowing.


Mary - I really like what you have done with the coops. I was thinking the exact same thing and had been trying to call you. I think it will really help with the "bullhorn" effect. Doing what you can to limit the noise is being a good neighbor, but don't let them bully you into getting rid of your boys. You ARE legal, they can pound sand. Like I said before, I think this is retaliation for your noise complaint on them.
