Shh don't tell anyone I have never been able to finish return of the king. Once that ring is dropped I'm done.
Yes!! I complained to dh about all the singing in the movie! It can lead to a hatred of elves.

I thought I was the only one!

Why would I want to memorize a map of an imaginery place?

About the Poetry and singing, The first part of the Hobbit has the Dwarves meeting at Bilbos place and they spend most of the Day and Night Eating, Drinking and Singing Songs. When it is almost morning, Bilbo realizes that they expect him to go with them. Bilbo says, Whoa there What is this all about? One of the Dwarves said: "Have you not been listening to our Songs and Poems? That is what they were all about!"

Tolkein was making fun of himself there......

my uncle and later my dad both read it out loud to my sister and I as kids -- our uncle made up different voices for every character -- and we absolutely loved it.

what's amazing is he actually invented the languages first, just for the heck of it (he was a philologer) -- then he invented all the crazy mythology and centuries' worth of of history -- and THEN he created the stories that became the Hobbit (for his kids) and then Lord of the Rings. it's all backwards from the way most people think of inventing new worlds. and if you haven't seen Tolkien's "Father Christmas Letters," run out and get yourself a copy -- its a book of all the letters he wrote to his kids, even during WWII, posing as Father Christmas at the North Pole. he sent illustrations too, and they're incredibly wonderful. perfect for this time of year!

The Hobbit was required reading when I was in 9th grade. Not my cup of tea then, not now. My DH, sons and best friend love fantasy. Not moi.

i actually can't stand sci fi/fantasy, either -- but because i learned these books as a little kid, i still weirdly love them. but not the movies, thank you.

It is funny. I can spend days reading a long book but Movies longer than two hours bother me.

Happy Chooks re: The Hobbit. The Hobbit and the rest of the stories go much better if you overlook the elvish poems, letters, what not and skip the maps. Just read the parts that are in English and you'll be able to enjoy the story.
Good to know, thanks!

I don't like horror, fantasy, magic, supernatural, or science fiction. Never have. Ohhh, I take that back - I did use to enjoy time travel shows.

I liked westerns, adventure, some action and crime solving and other mystery types, romantic comedy (Overboard with Goldie Hawn was one of my favorites). I like good documentaries, but now days they are not very truthful, so that takes the enjoyment out of them.

My taste has changed alot over the years. Currently my favorite genre is history, religion, and biblical history.

I don't watch TV, and haven't for a few years. I don't miss it either. Funny thing though, when I do see some things on TV - I kinda get surprised (or shocked) once in awhile. (I just saw a Victoria's Secret commercial - and I honestly thought it was porn, with those nearly naked girls!) Mike watches TV, and I just can't hardly stand it. It just seems like noise to me (loud background sounds all the time). I am rarely in the same room Mike is in, unless he turns off the TV!

He loves the sci fi channel with UFOs, aliens, Big Foot, etc. Cartoons really disgust me, too. My daughter thinks her babies need to watch them. They are horrible, in my opinion.

I do read alot now.
