Eva - great coop.  Must have been fun seeing it come down the road.

The last time I was this excited was, when they rolled in my triple wide. That was 14 years ago

re: eggs, one of my 18-month-old SPPRs, who first was broody twice then molting so hasn't laid an egg for months, just started up again yesterday -- with no supplemental light, and despite the crazy cold snap! so much for needing to wait til the solstice...

Rocks are winter layers.

It is great that she is laying again!

Yes, Rocks generally will lay most of the winter, albeit at a reduced rate. That is, if they can ever quit molting. My poor birds have endured two and a couple of them, even three molts this year. Bizarre molt year. And Meg, my 7 year old flaming red RIR/Buff Orp hen did two full, bare to the skin molts this past year and that old girl started back laying this past week at her age after a long break of about 8 months or so! Good, tough old broad.

ETA: I never give extra light to make them lay after losing so many to reproductive issues. Hatchery stock is so prone to that anyway, even without lighting them to push them beyond what their bodies want to do. Now that I have only one hatchery hen, hopefully, I won't see that much anymore. She is 7 years old but hasn't laid in almost 2 years. Her crop is her main issue, has become pendulous and doesn't process food properly, has to be massaged daily to push food up and into the hole.

No light here. Tuesday I got a barnevelder egg and a wellie pullet egg. I think the barnevelder is from one of my older girls that is coming back from molt. The wellie pullet beat out the older (almost 9 month old) barnevelder pullets that still have yet to lay.

We are giving light from 5 pm to 10 pm currently, and almost all of them are almost to POL. So anytime they could start cranking them out, and it will be welcome! The silkies are a bit younger, and I don't count on their eggs...so I meant not counting the silkies LOL.

for what it's worth, i've got five girls who just reached POL in mid-late Nov, and they all started laying without any additional light, and are still going strong -- so light may not be necessary?
