Oh, dear Lord, what a day! First the young cockerels are driving me nuts by driving the hens nuts. I have two D'Anver broodies that insist on sitting and I don't want to give them eggs, but I may have to or they'll hurt themselves (had one hen literally kill herself by not giving up on brooding chicks). Great timing, Mina and Penny, since it's been in the single digits and I already have one rooster in my basement bathroom recovering from some frostbitten feet. Chicks and bantam chicks at that, NOW?
Then, my sweet, funny wacky 4 year old BR hen, Barbara, died. She only showed up with hard abdomen about two weeks ago that I noticed, post-molt. She was a very small hen but laid HUGE eggs, which may have been her downfall.
Then, a little while ago, an explosion in the vicinity rocked our house. I looked out the kitchen window across toward the mountains and saw a huge puff of white smoke, but then it dissipated and no more came. So, DH called 911 to report what we heard and where we think it may have been, generally. I'm bushed.

I decided it was late enough in the day to watch the noisy geese and ducks, wow, I was wrong.
It didn't seem that bad when you were in the building, but then you walked outside and noticed the quiet. That building was just the Geese, LF and Bantam ducks, turkeys, 2 guineas and LF chickens. Bantam chickens were in another building, as were those for sale.

Oh boy, what a day. Sorry you lost Barbara.

And an explosion, yikes! Good luck with the broodies. We saw some D'Anvers at the show, and they are cute little buggers.

I can't believe I left out the two pitbulls! They came after Barbara died and before the explosion.

Two pits we'd never seen showed up at the chicken pen. Rex got all the hens under the coop and Scout, Isaac's son with my EE hen, Maretta, was standing out in front of the group facing the dogs until we got between him and the dogs, who thankfully, were still outside the fence wagging their tails. One, the female and probably the mother of the younger one, was massive. DH encouraged them to leave. Hope they don't come back.

well, we still have to manage to actually schedule this, he's a rather busy guy! and Rinda, if he has any helpful pointers on isbars, i'll be sure to pass them along... and a cream legbar discussion day is planned for some time in May, when Curtis (aka GaryDean26) will be out west...

I know, I can't wait to hear the report from that!!! And thank you I'd love to hear what he has to say about Isbars. They are such a gorgeous breed. I wonder if we will ever be able to get enough momentum behind them to get them APA approved like we are trying to do with the Cream Legbars.

WHAT a day.... watch the news and see if they say what the explosion was, that is so curious!

I am incubating eggs for someone, on Day 18, so of course, we have threatening weather.

I have 14 bantam eggs. Thankfully, I do have two D'Anver broodies, but they wouldn't want to let the babies go after they hatched and I would not take them all from them, either. I'm not sure both of them could cover 14 eggs! They just went broody less than a week ago, too, so would be a tad early for chicks to show up underneath them. I think they'd both mother them, at least Penny would.

ETA: We live in what my older son calls "Bumblesquat USA" so nothing would be on the news. The entire town could be blown off the map and they probably wouldn't care. Never heard sirens or anything. Hopefully, they at least sent the sheriff to investigate. Sounded like a propane tank blew up, or possibly a transformer. Shook the whole house.
