YAY! Are you gonna process them yourself?
I need to get my order in. My sister and I talked and we decided to butcher 100 of them. 50 for each of us. That is really only like one chicken per week. We do eat at least that much chicken. Besides that, my kids tend to go shopping in my freezer, too.

Good luck everybody that's hatching! I'm jealous, but I have a Brinsea cabinet. (beat Kathy to that one)

Just made a horrible dinner. I am jealous of Eva's breakfast. Just as well that I didn't like dinner since I still have some discomfort dental wise. Tomorrow I see my internal medicine doc. I hate the drive to Sacramento for that! I am going to get a lecture about not getting my mammogram done but I am ready for it. Maybe he'll throw me out!

Driving to the "city" is a good excuse to hit up the stores we don't have up here though, so it's not all bad.

I tried to talk my future chicken plans out with Michael at dinner. OMG, that was a waste of time. I felt like he was acting interested but thinking, "which plan costs the least?" So Kelly is just going to have to put up with the discussion for a while longer I guess. My dilemma is whether or not to continue with the Cream Legbars and Isbars. I have so much money tied up in them both and now to get the correct color of CL's and healthy Isbars is going to be another big expense. I just don't know if I want to go that route.

Anyway, it will give me something to think about during my drive tomorrow!

I wish I could go the "meat bird" route but it would be a deal breaker for me once I opened the lid on the shipping box. That is why I will always be a "hobby farmer."

Yes good luck everyone on their hatching- ditto!

Eva your breakfast looked soooo yummy.

Mary- my approach to chickens is to not worry about the amount tied up in what stock I have...only the infrastructure. Like coops, feeders, waterers, etc. That is where the real money is. For sure!!

If you want new stock then get it. Don't consider your past stock prices or you will feel trapped in certain breeds. There have been breeds that we have had in the past that really disappointed me- their personalities and so on. But I just changed direction and now have the chicken breeds that fit with our family the best. My DH certainly loves those Black Australorps we have now.

I like to tell my DH that a baby chick costs just $3 or $4. Whereas the fencing and coops cost(!) Your chicks of course must have cost more but you can always keep them as part of your laying flock. They don't have to be "breeders." There is so much joy in having chickens that they simply bless the ground they walk on.They are divine to be around.

So do it Mary- do what you really in your heart want to do. If you feel frustrated at buying more stock then stick with what you have. Or go a different direction. When I could simply cry since I have to do "x, y, and z," it is usually a mistake. That is what I hear you saying when you are talking about buying more stock in those breeds where you will have to spend so much more money to perfect them.

But you will make the right decision, I am sure of it- whatever is right for you!

When your beloved hobby becomes a stressor, time to de-stress it! Make the decision that gives you happiness and peace.

I guess I just don't want to pay any more money to the people I have already paid so much money too!

Let me slap them for you.

Sometimes it is like chicken addiction--just one more and it will be better....

All four chicks hatched. One black, two blues and one Delaware colored yellow chick. And that last one had the porcelain D'Anver first timer mama that I was concerned might kill it as it hatched, she was so hostile to the other chicks running around, but she's doing fine. The other first timer is also happy to be a mama. Her chick is out of my splash Rock hen, Gloria Jean, and it's one of the blues. Beautiful babies! Will have to transfer all the moms to the floor later today and then the chaos will begin, I guess, with them stealing each other's babies, or thunking them on the heads, one or the other. Some are famous for wanting them all for themselves and one seasoned mama, Carly, seems to not like the yellow chicks for some reason. Wish I could ask her why, LOL. Thankfully, hers are the blue and black.
