There hasn't been a person I've met lately that hasn't had one or several skin cancers removed. It seems like a club , everyone comparing scars except for the ones that can afford a plastic surgeon. Personally I feel every scar tells a story like the 'guys' in "JAWS." Well that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

My doctor said most skin cancers are from exposure as a child or young adult.

Wow, interesting that you bring this up. We have a daughter that took her son in to have a mole checked. The dr. said, it looked suspicious enough to have it removed, then our daughter says, hmm..I have one that looks similar, he went ahead and looked at it. Removed it. Our grandson's came back normal..hers was at stage two. They did the ..removing more lymph nodes around it and checked that, it was ok, so no chemo. She had a couple of others removed. One was stage two again, they checked out ok after the lymph node check, but, one is growing back, so, they are going to do chemo on that one. Because she has these, the dr. strongly suggested that she tell her family members to be checked. Well, there's dad here, I'm not her biological mom...but she has 6 siblings. They did good and were checked. None came back bad that had one or two removed. Whew. I even told our son that is out on a mission in GA. and he went because he was already wondering about two himself. His dr. there said they looked fine. I was worried about one on his back before he left..it really looks like what his sister had taken off..so, when he gets back..second opinion happening. Yes, very dangerous. But, very treatable if caught early. One of those things that people don't think about..oh, it's just a mole. Look up moles, see which ones are the ones to be watched.

My skin cancer wasn't even a mole. It was a flake of skin that was reddish and kept flaking off. Tiny little thing on my nose. It was squamous cell and beta cell cancers. Yikes. They did the mohs procedure and half the top of my nose was gone. They brought flaps from the cheeks up and covered my nose. Always get checked esp. if you were in a family of farmers or worked without a hat. A dry flaky spot is sometimes as bad as a mole. Now back to our chickens.
I just ordered 3 hens and a roo from piglet , they are buff orphingtons. Yeh!!

Crazy Hen = ditto with me. I had a tiny pimple on my nose - because I am a notorious picker, I kept bothering it. Nothing came out but it left a small depression. It would scab, fall off and start again. I thought one of two things when a sore doesn't heal - diabetes or cancer. My Dr. was not impressed but I realized that I had it for over a year and it still didn't heal. Usually I heal fast .

Finally I got sent to a dermatologist - he did a biopsy and said it looked liked basal cell cancer. I thought that was it - I'm done. But the report came back basal cell with squamous characteristics. I don't know what that meant: if I had two types together or if one morphs into the other. I know the doctor would have explained - but just the C word makes my mind panic and I can't seem to understand anything but dread.

I had mohs surgery- 2 layers off before clear margins. Like you he made a flap of skin to cover the sunken area. My nose kinda looks like a road map now. But I can't afford a plastic surgeon. At my age, I just don't care. Just very vigilant now.

My brother had whitish areas on his arm - looked like powdery mildew on plants. I kept nagging him to go in and finally he did. It was pre cancerous so I got hollered at for being an alarmist. GEEZ, excuse me for living. I would much rather be wrong(benign) that right (cancer).

My dad had skin cancer on shoulders and back - men usually cut grass without a shirt. It didn't show up till he was in his mid-80's. I guess some of the lucky ones - get it so late in life, it doesn't matter to them. My brother in law was raised on a farm and had a bad one on his ear lobe.

People don't realize the casual exposure just from strolling around the block, or pulling a few weeds now and then - or in my brothers case- from sun coming in on the drivers side of the car, can trigger skin cancer.

My sister just went in for some wonky thing on her arm but, doctor said she didn't know what it was (removed it) but, said biopsy came back benign.

I know I carry on too much and too often about skin cancer. But, it can be prevented and cured if found early. Do people really want to die from something like this? PLEASE people we don't want to lose any of you.

I have since gone back for a tannish , slightly raised spot. He said was actinic keratosis (I think the name is) and benign. I am pretty sure they can become cancerous. My dogs used to have many.
