BTW we've been getting rain, and more rain for the next few days. The grass is very green and tall after I just paid to have it mowed. You are welcome to the rain, humidity and tall grass - gratis.

Very dry here, they've had lots of rain downstate but our fire danger is high.

Left for work this morning with eggs pipped in the incubator

wish I could hover!
We had a little bit of rain--just enough to make the grass grow and increase the fire danger.

California's fire season is all year long now. It costs the state billions of dollars each year to fight fires.

We got another 2 1/4" of rain last night. The pond is nearly overflowing and the creek was a raging river, I can see debris in the trees at least 5 feet above the CURRENT waterline. Normally the "drive area" is shallow enough you can jump over the creek with a large step. In the summer we can drive the mower across to mow the other pasture. When we set the white tipped T post, my husband was wading in knee deep water. Now it's barely visible.

I inspected my hive this morning and the good news is.......the queen cups are still empty.

The queen is laying well, lots of eggs, larva and capped brood. I did not split the hive yet, but the new hive is all set up in case they swarm, hopefully they find the empty box as a good home. The empty frames that I put in the middle are still empty, but they are drawn out now, so I imagine the queen will lay in them soon. Very little honey storage in the brood box, so I don't think they are thinking of swarming yet.

Here are 3 of the queen cups, but I'm not sure what this blobby appendage is? It doesn't look like a queen cell, but possibly two drone cells next to each other? This is a picture of the bottom of the frame.

2 deeps full of bees. And this doesn't include the bees that were in the honey super. (I did not smoke them in case I had to find the queen to split them)

All put back together:

I went junking today to Goodwill. I am taking a Craftsy furniture painting course and I needed a small project piece, under $30.00. I found this little cabinet for $27.99. Depending upon how it comes out, it might become my nightstand. Or, it might be listed in the free section on Craigslist. The instructor challenged us to not spend over $30 on any one project piece and no more than $60 for the entire class.

The top of this is a solid slab of slate and it comes off. That should make working on the inside a little easier. I can reach inside to sand and paint.

I am not sure what it was in its former life. Magazine rack? Record cabinet? Ideas?
