OMG Jersey calves AND baby goats - Mike you are a devil!

Because of the risk of bacterial contamination of the milk, and because milk breed cows give so much more milk than a calf needs, calves are separated from their mothers at birth. They are initially fed colostrum from their mother, and then usually fed reconstituted milk replacer. They are kept separate from each other when small, because they have a tendency to suckle on each other and can cause injuries. Later when they're older they'll be put together and allowed to run with the other calves until they're old enough to breed, calve and enter the milking herd.
