Rinda, that is just wrong! OMG.

Kathy, congrats on your turkeys. MIne are nine and a half weeks and they are on the ground. Yikes I hope they are ok. I have only lost one since I moved them outside. Fragile little things! I can't imagine having them inside for 4 four months. Good luck. What kind are you getting? I checked mine out thoroughly this morning and I now think I have 3 boys and four girls but that changes daily. When I went out this morning the girls were tall and skinny and the boys were in full display with their necks on their chests. Who knows though?

Kelly,

Sorry about your turkeys.

We moved the three little Icelandics out from the turkey pen to the coop and free range with the Icelandics and the layers. They spent the entire day trying to get back in with their turkey friends. The turkey area is just too small and they are big enough to be out now anyway.

I had to put down a cream legbar girl in the brooder today and three others are sick. I have had them on Purina Medicated chick starter and they have been just fine. A few days ago I went to the feed store and they substituted Farmer's Best Medicated chick starter. Three days later four had wry neck, two seriously and two minorly. The worst of the girls had to be put down. One of the white legbars has his head turn permanently to the side now. The two that weren't too bad have really improved since I started treating them. Here is what I believe happened. I think the Farmer's Best had too much amprolium in it. Studies show that amprolium inhibits thiamin within 40 minutes of ingestion. Thiamin deficiency causes wry neck. I can't prove this but I have no other explanation for it. I threw out the Farmer's Best and put them on Flock Raiser until they are all better then I will put them back on Purina. Poor babies.

Oh that's so sad, and for such a preventable reason too. :( Always makes me nervous to have to switch products like that anyway... hope the others make full recovery!

Awww, that is just sad, Mary. So sorry that happened.

I had a problem with feed last week, too. I decided to try the local co-op, since it was a bit cheaper and had the ingredients I like (meat byproducts especially). Well, I used one bag and thought it was just too dusty. Next bag was even worse. Dusty and buggy. (Ya know, bugs chewing on the feed can make it dusty, too). I called the co-op I bought from. I emailed the company. AND, I even phoned the corporate manager and left a message. I was so mad. I bought a half ton of feed - to see if I would like it. Well, I returned it all. The layer feed actually looked and smelled fresh, but I was not going to keep it after that. Get this - they do not date their bags. Just "control numbers."

I got a phone call yesterday. Apologizing and asking me to try again. Explanation being that this particular store is in transition - changing managers and employees, I guess. He is the one that said they have "lot numbers," and would have to look it up to see the date. He asked me if other companies date theirs. Well, DUHH ! ! ! He also told me that he agreed their chick feed was too dusty, and said it was due to their process of crushing pellets. (Personally, I think the bugs made it even more dusty). Honestly, it was more than 50% dust! I don't care - I'm not going back. I went back to the expensive stuff.

Feed prices are killin' me!

i am not much into computers but a emu was found walking down a main hwy here. we were able to have someone put him in a pen he was very hungry. i am willing to take him to my place but only for a while. it would be great if someone could come and take him, the people who have him said it appears to be missing some toes didnt get close to tell if it is new or old. i havent yet seen him will this evening. i work at a vet clinic and my husband is very disabled so its going to be hard to give him the attention that we think he will need. can someone please call me at 417-646-8239 work or 417-646-2939 ask for sheila or harold and sheila

For the past two years I haven't lost any turkey poults to illness and they are brooded with chicks without medicated feed. They aren't subject to the stress of shipping though and I bet that makes a difference.

They are little turkey terrorists now; yesterday I spent a 20 minute visit from a friend defending his car from them

I pity the guys that are going to be installing my new fence.

Sorry about your chicks, Mary, how sad.

Mary, so sorry to her about your Chicks...that is just awful ....

Kathy, I got feed yesterday and didn't notice until last night, it was full of bugs too. I'm going to call the feed store this morning and see what's up. I have never had that happen...:(. Molly

Ahh, that is horrible about the chicks! Must have been a bad batch, it can't always kill chicks or people would notice i'd guess? but who the heck knows. We have 2 poluts that are inside atm, but 4 mths?? I cant even imagine how that would happen. I do notice the chickens LOVE the turkeys, they seem to think of them as big brothers, and the turkeys teach them bad habits, lol. from my research I don't think we have blackhead around here, but you never know. We have a metric ton of wild turkeys, however so the ground cant be that bad! I'm glad its cooling down, seems to be less people loosing chickens around here.
