Stella's Social Club

Thanks everybody for the well wishes. The remaining six are alive today and that's the best I can hope for right now. My sheep weren't here this morning. Maybe they heard about Kathy's place in MO and headed back east! Buh Bye!

I posted my chick picture in the "what breed is this?" thread, and from suggestions there I assume it is probably a Sultan. Too much leg feathering for a silkie, not to mention the white silkies can be quite hard to find so for me to get one by accident would be strange. It was also much too large to be a silkie egg. The only feature that doesn't match is that it only has 4 toes instead of 5, so maybe a poorly bred one? We just hatched the Lakenvelder eggs for fun, if they are female we will keep them for our layer flock, but we will be maxed out space wise for roosters.

ETA:
symptoms from our outbreak- the auction chicks (silkies) that were sick had a single eye swollen shut, so bad I thought one of them had lost an eye, they were filthy matted, luckily no creepy crawlies on them though. Also an occasional sneeze although I thought nothing of it at the time. I assumed the eye problems were pecking injuries from overcrowding. Cleaned them all up and treated those affected with (human) antibiotic eye drops. Got them all well and put them back in with the others a week or so later. Started seeing a few more with watery swollen eyes, that's when I started to suspect these were NOT pecking injuries. At this point I segregated my babies out and brought them inside. Within a few days we had a dog incident and all the auction babies outside were killed. One week later I started noticing a swollen eye in one legbar boy, As I looked and watched I saw watery, bubbly corners in their eyes, slight nasal discharge, and a few with a swollen sinus/eye on one side. This is why I am fairly certain it is one of the bad ones like MG. Did not notice the sneezing like I did from the silkies. Another female CL has symptoms today. I am down to one male and two females, also two black ameraucanas and a blue ameraucana with the CL girl in isolation that I am unsure about.

The weird thing is I don't live far from Mary, and my turkeys are fine in with my chickens............so far. However, I don't have irrigated pasture - Mary's place is much more moist than mine.

Mary - Every where that Mary went the sheep were sure to go.

mlmddh...........you can feel free to touch my broodies babies - I'm not gonna. Almost get a flogging just trying to clean the shavings out of the waterer.

Molly - gorgeous speckled birds!

lonny - so sorry you had to cull so many babies.

I hope this is the end of it for you.

Nice birds Molly!

So sorry Rinda. I don't have cream legbars until my little rooster grows out but I would be happy to send you more Isbars when you get everything under control.

Turkeys are all alive today, eating and drinking but still not nearly as active as usual. I'll take that versus the alternative. I am extremely cautiously optimistic.

Mary,

If they survive the black head will they have a chance of getting it again or will they be immune?

Hey Tonya! Long time no see! Yes, the turkeys can get it again but they may develop an immunity too. Older birds are not nearly as likely to get it as young birds. I am going to stop treat on Saturday and see how they do. No more yellow poops is a good sign. They will need time for their livers to get better. One day at a time.
