Stella's Social Club

Well, we spent the day insulating the two coops with roosters in them with pink insulation covered by 1/2" OSB. We closed off the fronts except for a few inches at the bottom for ventilation.

There are openings at the roofline for ventilation at the top though probably not adequate. If this works I will have someone install an exhaust fan. The bright and cheery coops are now very dark even midday. I will make a habit of opening the tops to the nest boxes during the day for light and air. Not what I had hoped for but if it works it will be worth it.

Lukka and her babies got kicked out for the day and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

I cut boards to fit the space on the sides of the coops to keep them from going under. They spent the day digging holes so they could get under!

We got a scare tonight as we were rushing to finish the coop insulation. A stranger entered our yard and told us he lived near us. We both immediately thought he was here to complain about the crowing. He beat around the bush for several minutes then said he was here to ask about the wood from a tree we had cut down. He did seem quite interested in the chickens and asked a lot of questions. I thought he would never leave. We lost over an hour of work time. I finally excused myself and said I needed to make noise running the circular saw. He still stayed another 30 minutes after that!

I should know tonight if this is going to work. Update tomorrow!

Mary

p.s. Thanks for the positive thoughts. I hope y'all are right!

Mahonri, Just to let you know.... yes Drekki Jr is noisy...
I have been sleeping in the family room at our house while our new born is warm and cozy in our bedroom with my wife.
So anyway, I didnt want to throw Jr out in the 28degree nights right off the bat... So I had him in a dog kennel in the family room for these first couple nights.
Well at 5:32am he crowed with it being pitch black, and my head about 4 feet from him. after 3 crows in 60seconds I finally drug his butt outside.... I am going to pull Dexter out from the 11 Icelandic hens and transition Drekki Jr in with the ladies over the next couple days.
anyway just an update.

I bet they will quiet down, Mary. I have 70+ roosters here, and it is quiet.
I am thinking quiet comes with comfort. They are out of their comfort zone right now. Give them some time and see.

I'm jealous.

Mary, it looks like you are working your fingers to the bone. Lukka looks really good and happy with her chicks.

I'd like to see a picture of Drekki Jr Also.
