Stella's Social Club

Before Thanksgiving, I got my hands on some fresh (as in unpasteurized) milk from a Jersey cow. I took the cream and made butter with it. I've made butter in the past with leftover heavy cream, but this was a first with "real" milk. It took a heck of a lot more beating to get it to turn to butter, but once it did, I was amazed by the color.

On the left is store butter:

LOVE it, Kelly ! I just skim the cream off of raw milk, put it in a jar and shake it. Then, I pour off the liquid (buttermilk), and rinse the butter and add a tiny bit of salt (makes it last longer, but not necessary). All in all, it takes about 10 minutes or so.

Kathy, Did you go to a show this weekend? I thought you posted you were going to IA? Did you bring anything home this time?
No, I had to work. I went to Iowa and Nebraska earlier this month. I only brought home the trio of White Rocks from Jeremy that I went for.

Most of the hard work is done. Well, we still have to split it, but hey, free wood is free wood. Thanks again Mary and Michael! So this is what Mary's oak tree now looks like in my yard. It took 11 trips in our truck to get it here.

The trunk:

Some of the "smaller" pieces to split:

And the rest on the drying rack DH built. (plus 1/2 row behind that row) The wood on top is over 6 ft off the ground.

I'm super surprised we're not the comedic factor on Mary's blog. Must have been quite a sight.

Well, I'm lazy and I have a Kitchen Aid stand mixer.

Nuff said.

And the buttermilk made some really nice biscuits for breakfast yesterday.

Then, you will just have to have some Delawares! This pretty pullet is a cull. Her beak is not "reddish horn," so she goes....

Nope...you already "forced" me to get some New Hampshires by posting pics of the stunning things........NO.....NO.....NO Delawares!!!

Kathy,

I forgot to post here the results of last weekend's show. My NH pullet was BB & Reserve American. My Campine cockerel was Ch. American, so champion row was a fun spot for me.

And I love your delaware.

Wow Kelly that's a lot of wood! It didn't look like that much on the ground. I am enjoying the view out my window now too. Still have to rake and get rid of the brush but at least "the hangman's tree" as the neighbors called it, is gone!
