I hate white chickens too, they just stand out too much. BUT................I will admit to having a secret desire for Delawares hens. (no roosters, don't need any more stinkin' roosters) Someday. She is a very pretty girl Kathy. Is she part of your project delawares?

Wow Kelly that's a lot of wood! It didn't look like that much on the ground. I am enjoying the view out my window now too. Still have to rake and get rid of the brush but at least "the hangman's tree" as the neighbors called it, is gone!

Tell me about it. All but 3 loads I did myself. (the kids weren't much help) Ah well, I'd rather load/unload most of it rather than split most of it. DH splits and I stack it. DH said it was the biggest oak he has ever cut up. (I still think the 2 he cut up for his grandparents were bigger) I got in trouble for telling him it was a "little" tree, when the trunk was 3 ft in diameter.

It didn't look that big standing there.

I ordered my netting.

It's a done deal now.

I just hatched three more WHITE Cream Legbars.... I love the way the white one's are growing out.....

besides my white empordanesa I am done with white chickens.

I had a dream last night that there was a pack of coyotes running up and down the fences trying to get after my chickens. I flung open the door and sent all four of my dogs out after them (not that I would send my dogs after a coyote), but Emma, the Great Dane ran them off.

my wife is a vet tech. a few months ago a German shepherd was lured in by a coyote only to be attacked by the pack. it ended up dying poor thing.

Mary - love the new stuff. Nice lookin' daybed. I have a hunch the lamp is safe from robbery though.

We went away for the weekend - and I came home to 3 less pullets. Sad day. The wry neck girl I expected to be gone, since she couldn't make it back in the coop most of the time. Sad, but kind of a relief too - she was having a really hard time lately and would do a summersault and land on her back. The other 2 were in the lower coop and doesn't look like hawk. The first wellie pullet was just feathers. My black sex link pullet, all that was left were her wings, neck and 1 leg. I'm thinking bobcat, but I'm not sure. It happened during the day though. Of course it couldn't take one of the 5 extra cockerels.

But I'm extremely thankful it didn't take my 2 barnevelder cockerels I'm growing out.

I'm going to look into that netting that Mary uses and see if it's feasible to cover my run. It's really large, so I'm not sure. But I'm always going to have babies in this coop and I don't want to lose them every year.

Kelly I say a hawk. My Redtail took 1 a day. One was just feathers with the body at the fence. 1 was exactly like you said a leg neck and wing and a pile of feathers . The other I caught it in the act It had ripped the beak off and was eating her. The one you had that was just feathers could of been carried off at night by something else possibly. When hawks do this they become varmints.
I think a bobcat would of taken off with the chickens. especially in the day.
They will take one during the day without hesitating if they see one but would take off with it.

Sorry about that. I did what you said and put posts up this weekend but tied fishing line with reflective tape. Oh and my friend gave me a giant Rooster that probably will help.

Jason - I initially thought hawk too, but then I noticed something odd. There was a pattern of disturbed pine needles below the run in an area that no other animal could have disturbed. It is a heavily wooded area.

We have had a bobcat in the past. (Saw it with my own eyes). And this attack was very similar to what I've seen before.

Hopefully, with the netting I ordered, I will take care of the issue, whether bobcat or hawk. It is worth $150 for my peace of mind.

what size netting did you get ? and where did you get it from?
Mine looks pretty goofy with the string , reflective tape and stucco wire.

Everything I get will be taking with us.
we did a walk through Friday. signed some papers tonight. Tomorrow or Wednesday our bank is supposed to have a apprasil done on the place. crossing our fingers .
Then we should be moving in on the 14th or 17th. Then its Coop on !!!
4 coops with runs. I guess covered.

But now I got Huey my Guard Rooster. Today the layer flock free ranged with the big guy and no issues. My breeders are staying in a covered run though.

Good luck with the house Cooper! Mine goes on the market tomorrow, late in the day so I have time to clean the last two coops. My realtor says with inventory so low we should get lots of showing right away. There is very little available in this area on useful land.
