So it had pipped a hole early yesterday... then almost 12 hours later it still had eggshell stuck to its bill and it was stuck there so it couldn't move. I removed the piece of shell carefully... it seemed to be doing better. There was movement and all that until an hour ago. There still had not been progress and the membrane was thick and dry very yellow tinted. That's when I decided to help because it didn't seem to be breathing much anymore if at all. So I removed as much as I could from around the head but couldn't get the head and neck free gently so decided to let the baby sit in the incubator to see if it was even alive still. There was the faintest breathing but it seemed obvious after 50 hours that this baby was in serious trouble. So I posted and kept looking for solutions or suggestions. Found one that suggested warm water and a coffee cup. I used a cereal bowl. Freed as much as possible without damage to the yoke sak or bleeding. Back into incubator now. Doesn't look alive but ... could it be breathing through the yoke? Were any blood vessels visible when you assisted? Had it finished absorbing its yolk? It looks really wet for a chick that would be ready to hatch. I would wash it off though. It might just need more time. You can wrap it in a wet warm paper towel.
I wondered if you had ripped through the membrane. Usually when I assist I poke a small hole where the air sac is. In both the shell and membrane. If the chick hasn’t done so already. I’ve only had to do that once though.
Yes it was definitely yellowing like old wallpaper.I always assist if the membrane has started to turn yellow. That has proved to be bad news for my chicks. I’ve never hatched ducks out before but if the one you just assisted still is attached to the egg then you can try wrapping it in a makeshift egg. It’s just a paper towel wetted with warm water stuck back into the incubator. That can simulate the egg and maybe help the baby finish absorbing any yolk that’s left. I’ve had that be successful with one chick.

Then it’s a good thing you assisted. Yellowing means it’s lacking moisture or drying out. Which leads to shrink wrapping.Yes it was definitely yellowing like old wallpaper.
