Updates since my last post:

we had one no-shell egg - it was the albumen only - thanks to those who told me it was close to a real egg

My husband’s brother came over - he used to raise chickens. He said that the hens are older than i thought - he says that at least two of them are close to 3 years old.

he also suggested that part of the problem could be that the hens sleep in the nesting boxes and not on a roost.

in your experience, could this be part of the issue? I have had these hens almost 4 months now.

Thanks for your help!!!!

Where a bird sleeps won't effect her ability to lay a quality egg.
But, IMO, no bird should be allowed to sleep in the nests :old
can make for poopy eggs and/or lots of cleaning of nests for the keeper.

Comb size has more to do with breed background than age, I do not believe that combs get bigger every year. I'm afraid you just got sold some clunker-duds.
