Awww so cute!! I love the progression!

If any of you have ever had the Ameraucana-type Easter Eggers you probably know that they can fly well and tend to wander. I was trying to avoid getting more because of that very reason but I absolutely love everything else about them so I caved in this year and bought more.

Well, we had a scare last night with my favorite EE pullet named Delphina. Delphina escaped the chicken pen yesterday and didn't come back to the coop last night. I heard her squawk after dark so I ran outside and searched and searched the property with a flashlight but couldn't find her. I saw a skunk and heard an owl so I thought she was a goner.

This morning I poked my head outside and breathed a big sigh of relief - there was Delphina eating grass in front of my bedroom window! I tempted her to come to me with some mealworms, snatched her up, and placed her back in the coop.

Oh, I am so happy to have her back!! But now I need to modify the coop to keep her in. 😒

I recently moved my grumpy Muscovy ducks to the chicken coop for the winter so they could have more inside space. I went to Home Depot and bought all the supplies and built a divider wall with a door AND moved the ducks in the same day. It was exhausting and my family became worried when they couldn't find me in the house all day. 🤣

Yeah! Haven't lost a bird to a predator in almost 7 years and I don't want to end that streak! For now I'll have to keep her penned up. I'm hoping as she gets older and heavier she won't want to fly so much.

7 years is crazy!! Good for you! It’s been about two for me I think

Yeah, I don't know exactly why, but I suspect the extra fences, dog activity, and the neighbors with free-range chickens have something to do with it.

We see lots of predators on our property - bears, foxes, owls, hawks, bobcats, skunks, opossums, raccoons, coyotes, cats, minks - pretty much everything.

Just captured this beautiful Gray Fox the other day on the trail camera.

Well, I got the wall that Delphina was escaping through covered up and I feel better now. However, it turns out Delphina is being bullied a bit so it's no wonder she wanted out of there. We'll see if I'll have to separate her or not.
