Stinky?

I think the odor will depend on how many chicks you have and what kind. I change the bedding ever other day at first . I raised 8 silkies and never had an odor for 4 weeks inside and then I tried with 25 Top Hats and the odor is really bad. I got those outside quick. Sprinkling DE around defiantly helps with the odor.
Good Luck!

I agree that it's only in the last week that I'm noticing an odor. It's not terribly strong, but I think it is because they're getting older. I meant to ask anyway, and then saw this thread. The first few weeks, all I could smell was pine shavings.

I agree there isn't much odor but the dust is what drives me crazy! So much I think it's time for my babies to go fly the coop to the coop!

Yep, my 2 RIR's had no odor the first few weeks but by the time they were 6-8 weeks, they started smelling like.... well... like... chickens, or barnyard animals I guess. Mine were in a small (29 gal I think) aquarium in the living room. I changed the bedding completely every evening as well as changing their water and adding a little more food. They were in my living room so I had to keep it clean! They just have an odor. Plain and simple.

I have an Amazon Parrot as well and they have a natural sweet odor, it's just part of them. I can take her into the shower with me but she's still going to have the sweet odor, it's just how God made her.

Am I the only one who likes the smell of chickens?
The ammonia smell I can do without though.

Nothing like turning over all the dirty wet pine shaving I've been dumping
in the run all year in anticipation of putting it in the garden. Cow poo has
nothing on composting chicken poo. Yum.
