A kid actually stopped at our house once and tried to sell us a goat, just because he saw that we kept goats.. He worked at the stockyard and said he'd picked up a little Nubian doeling...we declined. Then he asked if we wanted to buy a horse! We declined the horse too, though my wife casually mentioned that she'd like to have a horse someday. Bad move. A few weeks later, totally unannounced and utterly unexpected, he rides the danged horse to our house to show us.
...in the rain....
Um..yeahno...thanks anyway, though? I guess?
Months go by, and a good friend of mine who works at a different stockyard tells me about this cattle rustler he called the cops on.. Guy didn't know squat about the cows he brought, claimed he was selling for someone else but wanted the check made out to HIM, etc...all kinds of warning flags. Well, a neighbor of ours just happened to call around to the stockyards to put them on the lookout for some cows he'd had stolen while the guy was still there.. Neighbor describes the cows right down to the ear tags and, sure enough, there they stand. Still had the eartags in! So, my buddy calls the State Police.. KSP shows up and start asking questions, and the next thing ya know, the guy -- and like 5 cohorts who were also there at the stockyard -- admit to having stolen these cattle.
You guessed it.....the rustler was the same kid who tried to sell us the goat and the horse.. These days I can't help but wonder....whose animals were those that he trying to sell us? Were they stolen, too? Probably, I'd say..
