Stolen Horse--Man is BACK in jail!

I will probably get bashed for this but ROPO, dont make every engagement with Max a working "DATE" ...go out there and let MAX goof off with you!!! Let him feel his oats and let him feel you having fun with him feeling his oats. THEN slow him down and work hiim like you want him to be worked. When i worked my mares, i usually ran out in the pasture and let them walk or trot or canter or whatever they wanted to do and we just rode the fences. JUST FOR FUN. THEN i would bring them down in the flat pasture and ran figure eights on them and started working them like they would in a show ring.

After the workout for the show ring, i went on another fence check and we walked leisurely no hurry to get anywhere and let them cool down. Just an idea. Max has been boarded up without any fun or activity he is WANTING to have fun with someone he loves. GO FOR IT!!!

^^^^^^ Great advice

When I worked with my green girl (also 5 yrs old) when I got her, I would start and end with leisure walks while I sang 'I'll Go Walking After Midnight". She seemed to like it and I LOVED it.

don't worry! He's being pampered as well. We do some mind games, he gets to eat, get brushed out, bathed...massaged. Scratched in his favorite places.

I only ride him once or twice a week, so when I do ride, I want to make it count. We go different places, see different things, then once he's not feeling his oats anymore, we do some work on routine stuff. When I use the rice brush, he's in heaven. He almost falls asleep each time. I only work about 15 minutes now with him on his showmanship stuff and halter. Mainly walking, trotting next to me, squaring up and pivoting.

He REALLY likes the trail rides mainly because it's new things. But, he tends to do things before thinking them out. I'm sure as he gets older he'll work out that running full-speed into an unknown pasture is not a good idea, but in the mean-time I have to keep him gathered up. He seems to like any work I do with him...just as long as I'm touching him. Except the sunscreen...he's not a fan of the sunscreen.

Well I'm partly recovered so not immobile any more so I can't read through the 430 posts! Can someone fill me in? I did see the news story that the horse was returned and understand the leaser took off, sold the horse etc, but how did you and/or the police track down the horse and get him back and how long was the horse gone?

Mine are microchipped, but not everyone checks the chip when they buy/sell/vet horses. I'm not sure how much it will help.

I believe the horse was gone almost a year. She did have it micro chipped when got him back. She has only had him back a month maybe.

I think the guy she leased it too his nephew had it or someone like that. They have went through a lot of court proceedings.

Much more to tell then I know. I am sure someone will chime in that knows more and will tell more.

Glad he is home and doing well with you again RoPo!

That is just incredible. I don't think a lot of stolen horses are ever found again!

It's a beautiful horse too. Really nicely built.

There are a lot of 'mixed effect' bits like that - people either swear by them or swear at them!

In dressage, most people school in what is allowed for showing, which is basically, what English riders call a snaffle bit, but we can't show in many of the snaffle bits that are allowed in the hunters...howja get your pony back, ropo?

I don't want to use too harsh of a bit, his mouth is like butter most of the time (unless he's decided he's not gonna listen anymore, generally around the 20th time around the round pen), so using something harsh just doesn't seem like the best idea to me.

welsummerchicks, a LONG road. It took the efforts of several people on BYC, prayers, hoping and finally the arrest of two men to get him back.

Pretty much, the courts FINALLY decided that Max belonged to me. The uncle refused to give Max back and claimed he didn't know where he was. They threatened him with a warrant and he told them that the horse was at his son's house (because he had given Max to his grandson). They contacted the son who said they better bring handcuffs out because he wasn't giving Max back. So, a warrant was filed and served. He was arrested that morning and Max was reunited with me that afternoon!

I hadn't seen Max in over a year and it was nearly a year-long process getting him back. Thanks for the compliments on him! His hay-belly is definitely working it's way off! Now if only he'd quit playing in the ditch and getting his legs torn up just for the heck of it...

i havent been around much but I was so happy to log on and see that not only is he home but mending as well and not nearly in the bad shape I thought he would be in.

Congrats!!!!!!

Woohoo!

Max was in his "loving" mood today. We just stood there for 30 minutes...me holding his head, him breathing deep with his eyes closed. He started drooling he was so relaxed.

After that, we started working on his pivots. He had some troubles at first, but after the third time, he was doing them perfectly!!! Woohoo! So excited! We may be ready after all!

Here's an odd question...

I'm seriously doubting they actually took him anywhere publicly. That being the case, is there anything I can do to keep him a bit more under control at the show? All of it is going to be brand-spanking new to him and I have a feeling he'll be dancing like a 5-year old in a tutu. He won't bolt, I'm certain but he'll be "freaking" out at alot of the new stuff.

Anything I can do? He won't be leaving my side all day (my paranoia).
