Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, what a beautiful horse!!!!!!!!!!!! Sigh. I highly doubt they did ANYTHING with him other than basic care, which was just that - BASIC

Sorry I didn't see this question, ropo. About show anxiety - suggestions.

I think it's really good if you can arrive at the show grounds early.

Walk the horse around and let him graze all over the show grounds.

Ride or hand walk in each ring you are going to compete in.

We used to take our horses other places (stables, trails) etc before shows so they were used to being other places.

I'd like to be there at 5AM, but we'll likely be there at 7:30. I was thinking walking around would be the best thing. Should I use the chain under the jaw or just walk him without the chain. He tends to pay more attention to me with it, but also gets antsy with it.

IDK, just worried about him freaking out. I'll be walking him everywhere I can think of and hopefully finding a shady spot to sit in when it's time for the English classes.

I guess you know him the best, but I feel like the best thing is to not assume he will be nervous. After all, it does appear that he has been out and about on a tourist visa for almost a year, LOL!

I put the chain over the nose if I think otherwise I would get turned into a ground pizza or the horse would get loose, otherwise I try to act like I think everything is going to go very well, LOL.

I don't know if you longe your horse but if he knows how and the show grounds has an area where that is allowed, sometimes that can be a good way to let them get the ants out of their pants, as long as they are under a modicum of control and won't disturb anyone else or get hurt. Some of the horses, after having a chance to move freely and neigh as much as they want, they then settle down. That or a long ride in the warmup area. Some get better if allowed to get it out of their system, and some, it just makes them more frantic, kind of like a tired toddler, lol.

Our fairgrounds lets us use the grounds every weekend as long as nothing else is going on out there. Really nice during the winter to use indoor covered areas. Check with them. Maybe you can go the night before too at least?

Use a load radio in his stall. Rock or ountry music. Works for poultry to prepare for shows. May work for Max.

Oh, if the chain under the chin makes him agitated, you might consider what sport horse people do - put the chain over the nose. Wrapping it around the noseband so the chain does not rub on the bridge of the nose, keeps it from rubbing and tends to more get the horse's head down than make them rear or throw their head up.

I have had a major setback in my plans.. I am glad that Max is doing well... My 31 year old mare started colicking a few days ago and I was sure we were putting her down this evening... I have been on such a treadmill...It is still touch and go... She is my best friend.... I love her like you love Max... She will be a unicorn in a parade in two weeks if she pulls through... DRAT!!! I love costume horse stuff.. Do you parade ROPO???

I don't have a parade saddle or anything...WAY too much for me! I hope your mare makes it. Have you been up walking her around? Has the vet giving her a shot?
