Stop smoking support thread...

Hi gg706 – hope all is going well for you and all of the cigarette quitters on this thread! She decided that she didn’t like E-cigs; so she is back to cigarettes. She is trying to cut back – or at least she was. We are entering a very frightening phase as they have discovered a lung mass in her right half. This occurred after part of her lung collapsed from extreme coughing. She has been through two bronchoscopes and will go for a third one sometime next week. Each sample they took, so far, produced no malignancy. They can’t cut the whole thing out because there are too many blood vanes around it.
Because of the emotional turmoil, she chooses not to deal with the turmoil of quitting just yet. I tried arguing, but that created more harm than good – anger never solves anything. I don’t know what to do.

Not wanting to expose any future children to second hand smoke my wife & I quit together shortly after being married. I had been smoking for about 20 years, she 10, there were some tense moments at first but we managed to get through. We rat holed the money we would have spent on cigarettes & used it to buy fun stuff such as camping, fishing equipment, etc, etc, for several years but it finally got got mainstreamed back into the family budget. That little trick gave us the added incentive we needed to kick the habit as we are smoke free for 31 or 32 years now.

There are so many good reasons to quit smoking, just look around your diner table tonight for starters & not one valid reason for continuing to do so. Hey! You folks can all do this, it ain't easy but it is doable. Just do it!

You mentioned you have 1 EE....do you have any other chickens? They are very social creatures and should not be kept alone. I am not sure everyone is aware of this, which is why I mention it.

I quit smoking with a quality electronic cigarette, the joy ego. It took a few months getting use to, and i took in way more nicotine in the beginning but ive been smoke free for a few years now! I smoked for about 10 years a pack (at least) a day. Good luck to you!

I have not had a cigarette for 491 days...but who's counting? For those interested, that is 14730 cigarettes that I have not smoked. I smoked for 30 years. I just turned 39 to put that in perspective for you. I can't remember a time in my life that I did not have a pack of smokes and a lighter with me. I tried everything. Patches, gum, books, stop smoking cassettes, hypnosis, shots behind the ears, tons of different types of medication, cold turkey, watching my grandfather and mother die a painful death with lung cancer. Nothing worked. I watched my mother die and then walked outside and smoked a camel. I finally got an electronic cigarette. I started with a Blu. Which is what I call a 'cig-a-like' because it 'looks' like a cigarette. It initially got me off cigarettes but I still had tons of cravings. I upgraded to one that has a tank that you refill with e-liquid. No cravings at all anymore. I just steadily started decreasing the amount of nicotine in the juice I would buy.

Congratulations MrSelfDestruct! I was like you in that I started smoking very early in age, and when I turned 30, I quit. A doctor told me that 30 was a good age to quit. This year, I will be 70, and I haven't smoked anything since I was 30. Cold Turkey was the method I used, but I suppose that method doesn't fit every person. DW smokes and she is only 54 with a lung mass. I can't understand why she insists on continuing the habit, but criticism, or any suggestions to help from me gets us nowhere. She is now on O2 and can't walk 20 yards without stopping to rest. I wished there was some way I could help her. I dare not even bring up the subject as she will immediately throw up walls and go on the defensive. It just doesn't make sense to me.
But it is good to learn of people who have been able to quit. You can now stop counting the days, and the cigs, just lock that door, throw away the key and never go back. Think of yourself as a non-smoker - not a recovering smoker. We don't walk off cliffs or tall buildings, drink arsenic, smoke, or a myriad of other things people don't do and continue to live, but we get along just fine without doing them; so take heart!

I haven't checked in on this thread in quite some time, but I'm pretty proud to say that I've been smoke free since about a 2 months after I started this thread. I've gone through 2 Blu e-cigs, one off brand e-cig I can't remember the name of and one hand rolled cigarette since I quite. And, MY HUSBAND HAS QUITE ALSO. Well, mostly. He still uses his "crutch" pipe every now and again, but that's much, MUCH better than his previous pack + a day.

We're saving SO much money and we feel SO much better. I still get the occasional craving, mostly when I'm around family members who smoke like chimneys, but I keep an emergency stash of lolliepops on me at all times for such occasions.

Congrats to everyone who's quite and good luck and good thoughts to those who are still going through the struggle. Its SO, SO, SO worth it!

Just quit.
Keep active, busy.
Never pick one up again.
Never buy another pack.
Never bum one from a friend.
Do something new with your new time.
Put a few bucks in a jar every day.
The cost of your former habit.
Spend it in a year.
Just quit.

Way to go everyone I just passed my 2 year marker on May 18th. It was definitely difficult to quit but when I smell my hubby's hair, breath, or being in his truck it doesn't smell to bad wow you couldn't pay me a million dollars to light a cig up. I still get cravings and every now and then when someone lights a smoke up it doesn't smell too bad but then I remember the stale smoke smell and craving is gone.

1 day at a time 1 minute 1 second you can do this
