Store bought eggs to hatch?

Hi everyone!

Would you think it be crazy to buy eggs from the grocery store and try to hatch them? Probably is but I'm going to try it! Just for fun! I've seen and heard of people doing so. Course you want to know if the eggs are fertile first. There is a certain brand that I buy that the eggs appear to be fertile.

In about 2 weeks (need to let my 2nd batch of hatching finish) I'll buy some eggs and see how it goes. Though I know I would want to buy the freshest eggs possible.

Out of curiosity.. has anyone else done this? Comments and/or advice welcomed!

I’ve seen claims of people having it work. But it’s not a high success rate. And I have no idea if those claims were true.

Me! I’ve done it! I bought fertile chicken eggs from Trader Joe’s. I was able to fit 7 eggs in my little incubator and 4 hatched. 2 hens and 2 roosters. They were Leghorns.

I don't think its crazy, I've seen threads where people have done it successfully.
I would try your local health food store. They usually carry local eggs, and mine I get from them are usually fertile. I've also heard that Happy Eggs can be fertile, but in a dozen I got they didn't look to be.

I'll be buying an organic brand and the eggs are brown. It would be interesting to see if any hatch. It'll be sometime during the last week of this month.

I would look for pastured over organic. Organic pastured would be ever better. Free range organic, or simply organic doesn't mean much. Simply means they are packed in a barn, and able to "free range" around the barn rather than trapped in battery boxes. Unlikely their is a rooster in that equation. Pastured means they have to be kept on a pasture, some boxes will say something like 103 sq ft. per hen. Which is pretty awesome.
