My adult Fancy Pants is an ornery cuss. I have to point my finger at him & tell him no in a really stern voice, etc. so he won't fly at my legs. I've heard everything from walking around with them tucked under the arm to getting on their level with your arms out similar to their puffed wings so that you're bigger than them. Fancy seems to respond best with the direct stern gaze & no. He's not trying as much...I'll see him go to start then do that. Freddie I grabbed & hold walking around with him then put him back down....that seems to chill his little teenage, hormone going, crazy boy butt down. I think you've got to try a few things. I've kicked my leg to get Fancy off when he's connected or gone to connect out of instinct. The only reason I've put up with his mess is cause he's excellent with the girls. I really think he's worried I'll take them away or do something to them. I've seen him give a piece of food to a hen by letting her take it from his beak, call them to food, etc. So I don't doubt he'd protect them from anything. That's what I want in a roo....just not the challenge/try me. I got 14 juvies hoping for girls to give him plenty, but there were 6 boys. I'm waiting to see how that progresses as so far no one has answered the ad for the 4 I listed. Of course, the boys have discovered girls, but the girls aren't ready for that yet! So the girls are running & not submitting.aww. when i got chickens, i got 6 roos out of 12! thats half! LOL. now i have 3 more hens to balance it a bit. but one of my cocks is mean. any advice?

If it's an issue of being mean to the girls, I'm not certain. I try to shoo the cockerels from the pullets. Hoping they'll get better as they all get older. Not sure what to do otherwise. You might have to find an alternative arrangement for him. Maybe he needs a few more girls? I know Fancy has 1 of the 3 that's his favorite...she's bald. So I was aiming for 10 hens total...but this year I only lost 1 (last year was almost 3/4) and the numbers are off due to the boys. Plus, I don't know how things'll play out once everyone is fully grown/sexually mature. If a few more hens are possible you could try that & see if he chills for either circumstance.
oh no....hope it's come off. i couldn't find blue-kote so i picked up hen healer & some no peck lotion forget the name, it's in a brown bottle. my mouse had had her feet feathers pecked until she's bleeding & they've been completely pulled out. poor little baby. didn't have stuff here so i've been using triple antibiotic with wound powder mixed in. stopped the bleeding & no sign of infection so far.well long story short i had NO HELP putting Blue-Kote on my roosters comb and was a complete deaster we are both blue/purple and is has not came off my face yet so so me and my roo Oscar were walking around looking like smurfs what a day![]()
