Mabel was wanting to strike up another conversation with Indigo, but whenever she gathered up her courage to do so, she found that someone else was alredy talking to her. One day, she was hidning beneath the nestboxes when Indigo squeezed in behind her. "hey, Mabel, I wanted to talk to you but never got a chance." " About what?" Mabel asked nervously. "first of all" said Indigo "where did you get the idea Jujube didn't want you around? She isn't one of those hens that will bully those at the bottom of the pecking order, I have firsthand experience with that." How did you know that's why I was hiding?" cried Mabel "Pumpkin told me" answered Indigo. "and second, will you be my friend? Neither you nor I have many." Mabel, shocked at this openly kind gesture, was silent.
 
No one, NO ONE, ever spoke to Mabel like this. The other chickens had gotten so used to her being reserved and mostly left her to her own devices. She was struck dumb by little Indigo. The pullet, desperately wanting an agreement, said quickly, "I take that as a yes." Mabel's mind woke up, and in a dreamlike state nodded slowly. Indigo smiled. "Excellent. Jujube and Pumpkin aren't the only ones who can form friendships." Mabel felt relief. Someone wanted her...
 
"Mabel, Honey, come sleep over here!" Indigo called from the oppisite roost. Mabel felt self-consious as she made her way over to the "old roost" and hopped up on it. She heard Pumpkin whisper "wow. Mabel's made a friend" to Jujube, and she heard Tiger say "the weirdos have made friends with each other." Mabel looked away from Tiger, Then Indigo spoke up. "How dare a juvenile like you speak like that of a senior hen!" Tiger looked shocked. Indigo was only about a year and two months old, which made her only three months older than he was. Mabel was the same age, or maybe a month younger. Tiger was bigger than both. "how dare you talk back to a rooster!" he hissed. Elliot stepped in "that was ungentalmenlike, Tiger. Indigo is older than you are and you must respect her. Indigo, respect the cocks, even if they are younger than you, they are higher in the pecking order." Mabel gasped. Indigo had made frinds with her, and now had stood up to her. Was there no end to the surprises in this new coop?
 
Tiger sighed. He hated being embarresed, insulted. When he and the other 11 abandoned chickens had been rescued, he was about the size of a standard hen,as he wasn't fully grown, so they had assumed he was a hen. Nobody had bothered to look at his thick legs, his large comb. He was a "pullet" until the second week of quarintine, when Bigperson realized he was still growing and that he had several rooster-like qualitys. Nobody was sure how he and Elliot would get along, but so far things seemed fine, except from Tiger's perspective. Elliot would boss the hens anround, but then chastise Tiger for doing the same. It was annoying.

Pumpkin walked up to Tiger, "Hi, How are you?" She asked
 
Tiger looked up at Pumpkin. "okay, I guess. Just feeling underappreciated. Big-person doesn't like me, and I'll have to go if I fight with Elliot. The hens all treat me like a chick, and on top of everything, Tiara-Tutu told the origanal hens about my being mistaken as a pullet!

"Just ignore them! They are just being mean... And yo get big person to like you, you can try following it, and maybe letting it hold you." Pumpkin said
 
"um, okay" said Tiger. He had held a deep grudge against Big-person ever since it had declared him a pullet. Oh, well.


This was Mabel's first time free ranging, and she felt nervous. Despite Elliot and Tiger carefully watching out for preadators, she was worried that something would come and get her any second. She was tense, too tense to peck like Indigo was doing. Suddenly a giant dog from little-person's house acros the street spotted the chickens and began to trot toward them. Immediatly Tiger shouted "PREADATOR ALERT! GET TO THE COOP!!" All the hens Ran toward the coop, with Tiger leading and Elliot behind. The dog began to run faster, and the hens flew one at a time though the pop door back into the safety of the run, and from there, walked into the coop. Finally, Elliot walked into the coop. "alright, Tiger, take a head count. And don't forget to count yourself." Tiger counted1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-13-14-15-16. "they're all here." "whew. that was close" said Elliot. "good work Tiger. I hereby promote you to the position of second rooster." Tiger stood in front of the hens, some of whom were scared silly. "Nobody leave the coop until the dog is gone. The dog could see you and break into the run" he said, swollen with pride and happiness.
 
Tiara-Tutu poked her head through the pop door for a split second. The dog was still there, sniffing at the run door. Tiara pulled back in and took a deep breath. She was usually unshakable, but the dog had scared her so badly she would have stood there frozen unless another hen (she didn't know who) had pushed her from behind and yelled "Get going, banty!"
 
Tiara-Tutu lost her balance and shrieked. "AAH!!" Pumpkin caught her, but the dog saw them. He came leaping in and started barking. "SHUT THE DOOR" screamed Tiger. Pumpkin shut the door right in the dog's face. The dog was just about to come in their run when a huge gust of wind came and shut their door. The door slammed on the dog's paw, and the dog whined. The dog couldn't get his paw out from the door, and he was stuck. "Okay, looks like we're gonna have to wait for TalLady to come and help us. So, the chickens waited and waited and waited.
