I have three chickens; one dark brahma, one white sex link, one red sex link. They are all five months old, and they are all hens. The white sex link used to be the most aggressive, and at the top of the pecking order, but ever since the strange episode with the red sex link, that has changed. The red, Blossom, was foraging around, then suddenly lifted up one leg, and started squawking. She seemed extremely alert for the rest of the day. She then started coming slowly over to us, and jumped up on my grandma's lap!! She was pretty normal after that, until she squatted down next to my mom, and let my mom pet her. (this was very unusual behavior for her.) But that's not it. The three chickens line up on the perch with the dark brahma closest to the coop, the white sex link in the middle, and the red sex link (Blossom) on the outside. The white sex link was at the top of the pecking order until Blossom freaked out. Now, she is in the middle of the other two, and the white sex link pushed to the outside. It seems like she is bossing the others around now, too! PLEASE reply to this!! I have some pictures of Blossom that I can post on this page, too. Thank you to those of you who read this whole thing. Sorry it's so long

@Kat Chickens I think what is going on is Blossom is the first to "blossom" - she is maturing more quickly than the other two. Sometimes when hens ( I should say pullet considering that she is under a year old) get close to the time they start to lay eggs they get a bit more aggressive temporarily, but it also could change the pecking order if one matures faster than the others. When Blossom squatted down next to your mom, she was kind of behaving like she would if there was a rooster around. I bet her comb is getting more red and she will begin laying some eggs pretty soon. Eventually the pecking order issues will calm down.
