STRANGE ANIMALS AS PETS -- ANYONE HAVE ANY?

I thought it was totally bizarre that I used to have a pet rooster until I found Backyard Chickens!

This is Devin, an olive baboon. She was about fifteen and no longer with us. She choked on a carrot.

And Patches the wolf in the background. We also had mongooses when we were kids.

They are not really pets, but I have a bathouse in my backyard with nearly 200 bats. It is filled to its capacity. I am having trouble with newborns falling out since it is so full. My brother and I are in the process of building a second house. I have a photo of a baby that I returned the house. My husband says they look like gargoyles. They are hairless as newborns. I will post a pict. when I figure out how to do it.

Bats! Very neat. I put a bat house in my yard several years ago. None have ever used it. Someone said that you have to have a body of water nearby and I don't have any within a mile of me. The only thing I have seen in it is Cuban Tree Frogs.

Ok, normal pets:
Rats, mice, gerbils, rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, ducks, and chickens.

Odd pets (includes but not limited to, I know I'm forgetting someone!):
Pygmy mice, degus, a baby robin, bearded dragons, a red tegu, a ball python, corn snakes, rat snakes, kingsnakes, geckos (leopard and golden), a chameleon, nigerian uromastyx, sugar gliders, a brim, a blue channel cat (anyone in NC want a catfish?), and spiny mice.

And now for pictures!

This is one of my sugar gliders running like crazy in his wheel:

Here is the catfish, he is much bigger now, and is getting way too big for my tiny 10 gallon aquarium:

Enjoy!

If you don't have a lot of time to spend with a pet, please do not get a sugar glider! Plus, if you do decide on going with gliders, get two of them! They are extremely social critters, and can die if they get too lonely. No matter how much time you spend with them, if you only have one, they will still be lonely. If you don't spend time with them, they get wild, plus some people are allergic to their urine (they raise red welts all over me when I play with them, but that's a sacrifice I choose to make).

I have a breeding pair right now and their two 2 day out of pouch joeys. I just sold a brother/sister pair for $300, which is cheap. They would have been $400, but the lady who bought them is getting the male neutered, so I dropped the price to help out with that expense.

If you want to check out gliders, what it takes to own them, how much time you'll be spending with them (every night), and what could go wrong, check out Glider Central.

Now on the other hand, beardies love to be cuddled, don't typically get wild if you get busy and can't handle them every single day, are easy to care for, easy to clean up after (once they get older), and are easy to feed. The only downside to owning one is if you have small children (under 10), be extremely diligent about them washing their hands after handling any reptile. All creatures (even us) have salmonella in their lower intestinal tract, but handwashing gets rid of nearly all of the bacteria. Don't let your children kiss reptiles (or any other animal if it can be helped).

I'm so glad to see others on here owning "strange" pets, even though as we have seen, they aren't so strange to us!

Hope this helps some,
Emily in NC

Hey Maidservant,
More pics... more pics please! I love reptiles and have several snakes and a sulcata tortoise. I have had other reptiles in the past including Egyptian Uromastyx and Leopard Gecko. I would not mind having a Morrocan or a Saharan Uromastyx, they are really pretty. What kind is yours? Can you post a pic?
