Strange Bumblefoot - claw growing out of bumble?

Hello all,

This one's a new one for me. Our Jumbo Pekin has an on-and-off again relationship with bumbefoot because of his size and weight. I saw him limping a bit the other day and we took a look at his feet. On the outer toe of his left foot, he has a bumble but there's something strange about it. There seems to be some sort of extra growth (I'm not sure what to call it). It looks and feels a lot like a toe or dew claw. I was hesitant to try pulling on it but did some. It definitely doesn't seem to be a splinter or anything like that, feels much too attached. See photos.

Any ideas? I've never seen anything like this.

Is there a chance that another duck's claw broke and this duck stepped in it and it got infected?

It's possible. I tried pulling on it and wiggling it around and it seems pretty stuck on there. It makes me thing its growing out of the injury site.

I have a cockerel that has a second claw growing out of his toe. No bumblefoot though...

We're doing a couple soaks in epsom salt water today and I'm spraying him down with some vetricyn but it's really hard to tell what I'm looking at. I sent some photos off to our vet but aside from that I'm not sure what to do with it.

I feel like that can't be good, but I hesitate to pull it out if I don't know what damage it might cause.

Yeah, I wouldn't pull it out either. Hopefully your vet can give you a clearer answer.

Hopefully you’ll hear from your vet. I’d leave it until you do other than Epsom salt soaks

Vet took a look at the photos and thinks its a case of hyperkeratosis, which is a result of the inflamed foot tissue. Recommends against removing it and to continue treating topically with epsom salt baths and our other treatments (neosporin and vetricyn).
