Drakes do get curly tail feathers, unless they are molting or in eclipse plumage. That age, they could be going thru juvenile molt, so voice is much more accurate than tail feathers. Girls QUACK, so they hyena is likely female. Drakes have a raspy sound, not really a full quack.

Some varieties we can also tell gender by looks/color pattern, so if you can post some pics (or embed a YouTube video of their sounds) it might help.


And yes, 3 drakes will be too hard on one hen. Selling the hen is an option, or adding more hens, or selling a couple drakes. Or separate 2 drakes from the pair.

As far as your daughter, she should probably just stop trying to hold him for a while.

Wait, dont ducks have a single tail feather that curls up backwards if they are males ? The pekins do.

I had this for both of mine. I think that this happens to most drakes and ducks. If the sex feathers come in, then they are a male. If not, most likely a girl

That was a story as funny as if @WannaBeHillBilly told it. Our drake lost his drake feather over three months ago and has not grown it back.

So... We have 4 ducks - Fish and Chips and the newbies Cheese and Quackers.

Fish and Chips are 6 months old and Cheese and Quackers are 3 months old.

Today, my daughter and I were sitting outside enjoying the weather and playing with the ducks. April (my daughter) picked up Chips and set him on her lap. He bit onto her finger, and she laughed, but he had really latched on ... She's got a bit of a finger hickie now.

Anyway, he started stomping his feet immediately, and then gyrating. My 15 year old daughter jumped up out of her chair as soon as she realized she was being humped, releasing her finger with a SNAP from Chips' beak shutting and he landed on the ground. He didn't run.. he just stood there, peering up at her sideways like .. "Would you please sit down so we can continue".


We are a little freaked out. I mean.. a lotta bit, but... These are our first ducks. We have nearly daily gender reveals. Fish has been a girl and then a boy, then he grew sex feathers, then they fell out and now they are back.. Cheese we are 90% sure is a girl.. unless she's a boy.. But we think she might be a gender.. or not.. and Quackers we are pretty sure is a boy, unless he's a girl.. which is entirely possible.

I tried sexing them as chicks - that got me no where, but one duck lovingly shot a stream of poo directly into the open mouth of the Tractor supply lady who was trying to help me sex them.. We don't go there anymore.

So.. Here's my other problem.. If i have 3 boys and a girl I can't keep them. I think they would kill her. I don't know what to do.. they are VERY well loved little boys.

Also - noises - so Fish and Chips quack, low and sometimes they sound like farts. Quackers ... and the irony of this isn't lost on me... Doesn't ever make a noise. Cheese - Sounds like a laughing hyena ALL the time. (Actually she only does it when she can hear me but not see me.. when I'm not home, she's quiet.. or so my husband and housekeeper have said).

Well first ducks are easy to sex if they are done at 24-36 hours it’s till swollen. I would not recommend anyone doing this unless you are well versed in doing this since you can do some bad damage to their bits if done incorrectly. mans by six months you should be able to tell the sex of the duck by then. The hens will have a loud quack. And drakes will have a raspy squeaky whisper quack. There is a HUGE difference.
I will side note you will have to rehome or get at least six more girls if you have two drakes. To each drake the amount of ladies is a ratio of 1/5 at least.

And if you have all females then they will mate with eachother. It’s not common to have them mate with a human. Even if they imprint it’s not a normal event. So it shouldn’t happen again.
Another huge thing you will notice is males will have a curly tail. Pending on breed it can show up 4 months. But pending on breed.

Well. .seriously. .
Ducks will hump just about anything. It's not uncommon.
Hormones are especially high at that young age and they are just figuring things out. Kind of like teenagers.

Oh. I can see how that's true . I'm wondering if one of my ducks has no gender, sometimes she will lay an egg, other times she will hump her husband not sure if she is right in the mind, y'know.
