My Gold laced Wyandotte did something very strange today (or at least strange to me).

I was with them in the run, and she stopped once, and acted like she was going to make a fertilizer deposit. Then she moved on, and about 30 seconds later she repeated the motion, but this time she dropped an Egg!

Well, not really a real egg. It had a very thin shell, and no Yolk! It was larger than the normal sized large egg.

Later on in the day she went up and sat on the nest for about a half hour without laying an egg.

What is going on?

As you can tell, I'm new to this game, but I learn something new every day.

Please help me with today's lesson.

Thanks,
Bob

When they first start laying they do have some strange eggs...lots of double yolkers...extra large eggs to even shell less eggs. Once their little systems get up and going then things go pretty smoothly. I had a hen sit in the egg box off and on the entire day and didnt lay until the next day.

I think it just takes time.

How old are your birds? I have had something similar to this only the other way around. First my bird was in the nest box and didn't lay any eggs and later I watched her get up off the ground and there was an egg.

Hey Cmom:

My girls are approx 24 weeks. My W'Dotte was the second to lay back in mid July. She laid her very first egg on the ground in the run, and the next two in the roost. She finally found the nest box for a couple of eggs, and then went on vacation for nearly a month. She had been laying a purplish colored egg, but the one yesterday was a light brown, but with a thicker shell it might have been a different color.

I think perhaps she is afraid of missing a treat. She is my "beggar", and is much like "Miss Piggy" when it comes to treats. I think she retired to the nest box yesterday for a rest.

Hey Codybird:

I like the way you think! Your play on words had me chuckling (not clucking) for quite a while.
