Hey y’all. I came across this while checking on my ladies. I have never seen poop that looked like this, so I’m a little concerned.

All the girls have passed their last physical health inspection a few days ago (healthy vents, nares, comb coloration, no signs of mites/ lice), have been laying regularly, are spunky, full of gusto, and are eating and drinking well.

Should I be concerned about this? I lost a beloved chicken 3 weeks ago from something unrelated (EYP) and am definitely wanting to get ahead of any issues that could be life threatening. I’m holding off treating with Corid until I get a second opinion, as I am not sure Coccidiosis is what’s going on. What the photo doesn’t show very very is that the droppings are coated in mucus.

Thank you for your input! I learn so much here and the sharing of knowledge is much appreciated ❤️

Have they been pooping like that consistently, like 3 or more in a row?

I let my chickens free range but I don't know what there eating. I do know they like eating plants and bugs. And they do have poop from normal to a watery mess. It changes each day depending on what there eating that day. But they are healthy and molting.

Hope someone can chime in to maybe give you a clearer answer.

I’m not sure if they are consistent- my girls free range and I haven’t seen any droppings like this before.

Thank you for your response. Does anyone else have any ideas?

There is a little intestinal shed in the runny poop. Have you wormed your chickens recently with a good proven wormer, such as Valbazen, SafeGuard, Panacur, levamisole? Are they taking enough water? Do any appear lethargic or puffed up (hunched?)

See if it repeats..otherwise, I’ve seen similar come and go..looks like when the urates were being deposited it got a little watery..fruits or veg can cause that..if it keeps on, would be worth a look under a scope, if you have one, go ahead and take a look..

I haven’t wormed them with any of your listed wormers. I dewormed them last fall with Poultry Dewormer 5x (6.7 mg Fenbendazole tablets) as the woman at the feed store discouraged me from purchasing SafeGuard and using it off label for chickens.

The ladies are drinking water, no one is lethargic, or puffed up. It’s been insanely hot here the past few month (I’m in Portland, Oregon where we had temps over 110 for 4 days in a row), so they’ve been less active during the day- but are back to their daily foraging, dust baths, and exploring now that we’re getting a break from the sun. I have one chicken whom’s comb varies from bright ted to a pale shade, but she isn’t exhibiting any lethargy.

Should I grab some SafeGuard and deworm as a precaution?

Thank you for your response- it is very appreciated.

I do have a microscope! I’ll order slides today.
