Strange question

Why would my geese be pulling mouthfuls of hay and leaves into their pools with them? I was watching the geese from my kitchen window and they were grabbing mouthfuls of hay, and bringing it into the pool with them. Then they would go get some dead leaves and bring them into there as well. Of course the pools WERE clean before they did this.

Any idea why?

mine have always done this, I will clean their pool and they cant wait for that clean water but as soon as I walk away they are mucking it up with what ever is close.

i just used to think it was something to do with having something in the water to dabble around at, or just softening the food so they could eat it . They just seem to enjoy a splash more when the water has a bit of muck down the bottom to chase around with their beaks. But that was just what I thought when I watched mine doing it.

you could be right, I know even their water bucket in the barn always has about 3" of muck at the bottom no matter how many times I clean it.

I wish I could figure out why the geese puck YUCK in their water and convince them to STOP. Mine have it down to a science. They found out the quickest way to mess up their water was horse manure so AS SOON AS I put fresh water down they start carrying manure to it. They seem to LOVE it, but my barn cats really resent that every bucket/tub/pan of water on the property is full of horse manure all the time.

Every single pool was emptied, scrubbed clean, and refilled. Only to have the geese refill them with hay, mud, and dead leaves. I sometimes wonder why we go through all the hassle of changing them. LOL

Mine do the same thing. They pull hay and bedding and almost fill the top of the water bucket. It took me a while to figure out why the cats water bowl kept getting dirty too. Then I caught them playing in that and messing it all up too. Thankfully mine don't drag the horse manure in but anything else they get their mouths on go into the liquid treasure chest.
