Hi I have a cream crested legbar that hadn’t laid yet. Today she was acting a little under the weather -I followed her around and found that she was hiding under a tarp on a hay bale when I picked her up to move her to a warm place I saw there was a little blue egg left behind - but it was cold so it was not from today - so I guess she has started laying. Then I put her in a nesting box thinking maybe she just needed to do that and actually wasn’t under the weather. But then when I came back out she had a long white thing hanging out of her -I don’t know what prolapsed vent looks like so I was looking that up when an egg yolk came out and then she walked away. Does this happen sometimes? Is this a bigger problem? They have started free ranging most of the day in the backyard and I worry they haven’t been eating enough of their pellets -could it be because of that aka not getting enough calcium? Is this an emergency that I need to take her to a vet? Thank you so much for your advice.

Now she’s kind of puffing up and off on her own a little -do I need to put her in? I don’t want to stress her out and sometimes she doesn’t like to be handled.

I would separate her somewhere comfy and warm, set her up with some wetted down pellet mash and water with electrolytes, and monitor whether she eats and what her poop looks like for a day or two. I think it’s not uncommon for hens to lay weird/soft eggs when they first start laying, but she definitely looks like she’s not feeling well.

I’m feeding them later feed but they just started free roaming most of the day and I’ve been worried she’s not eating enough of the feed. Also worried I didn’t have the oyster shell out enough. I put a ton around and out now so hopefully it will help.

Yes, that is an odd shelless egg with a tail. Hopefully with having access to crushed oyster shell and layer feed, her shells will get hard. When they lay these kinds of shell-less eggs, they become weak and feel lousy. Right now I would give her a human calcium tablet or Tums for the next 3 days, to see if it makes a difference. Let us know how she gets along. Here is an article that explains some of the weird eggs we may see:
