Strange Wound - (See Closed Thread) "My neighbor shot at me"

I've seen all kind of horrific scenarios when it comes to folks feuding over livestock and pets. I'v seen a man shoot his own dog while trying to shoot at the neighbor's dog. I've seen people shoot their own child while attempting to shoot at a neighbor. All kind of horrible things can happen so get your privacy fence put up. Get your cameras in place and document everything.

If you want to get creative with your landscaping learn how to muffle noise with trees and other types of natural barriers. Note how subdivisions make use of trees, shrubs, and dirt to keep road sounds out of the subdivision. Those beautiful shrubs and grassy mounds are there for a reason.

As to your question about the wound, it could have very well been the result of a peck from another bird, insect bite and so forth. If you suspect a bullet wound, get a vet to radiograph the bird, remove the pellet and keep it all for evidence.

These feuds don't end well for anybody involved and its a shame the animals have to suffer as a result of human behavior.

Why are you selling your roosters?

Because the neighbor filed a noise complaint and a policeman showed up at my door Wednesday to talk to me about it. He said the neighbor wanted to file a harassment charge next time because he can't sit out on his porch without hearing the birds crowing.
I reminded him that we had been working on selling the two extra roosters since they were shot at two weeks ago, and that it would take a little time to put up a privacy fence or get some firs planted. I also reminded him that there were no laws against roosters or even limits on how many birds we can keep-- out where we live and that we intended to keep one rooster at the very least. (I can't believe I had to tell a policeman this...but I think he was coming and talking to me just to appease the neighbor.)

My EE is extremely loud so my husband and I decided it would be best to try to make peace by re-homing the EE. Unfortunately, taking them to auction is what I wanted to avoid since I wanted to ensure he got a loving home. It not quite being spring yet, people aren't looking as avidly.

To reiterate, my husband and I are no pushovers. We're trying to stay peaceful with the neighbor, but at the same time, we understand the laws and our rights and will be keeping a rooster in our flock. I'm willing to let my roos go at this time because I am looking for a quality Sumatra to breed from for birds for show. None of my roos have multiple spurs so there is really no reason to keep them around and make anyone suffer.

@theoldchick - Throughout the Spring and Summer, the trees lining the back of our acreage do cover and stop sound well. But it being winter, everything is bare down there. When husband and I talked about planting firs, we also considered the amount of time for them to grow big enough, and that we would have to cut down the oaks and others lining the road to give the firs enough sun and space. I'm more for the natural fence. Natural fences take time though... as does pet re-homing.

I've been following this closely. I hate to say this and it's NOT my opinion, but you've been stamped with the same "crazy" label as your neighbor by the police. I lived with a trooper for many years, I know how this goes. They make a decision early on, and nothing will change their mind unless they fear your evidence(that they ignored) ending up on the news. Which is why you need evidence.

You are right but sadly you need to prove that. I know all too well. There's nothing that can be done to me here that the police care about because I am no longer a member of their "family". Too much to explain but that's why I need cameras. Nothing less will get them to do anything. Proven and established.

Please be careful, this isn't going well for you.

I have been suspecting this and it saddens me deeply. We called them once since living here and I think it was the dispatcher telling them it was a firearm instead of a pellet gun. They may have felt as though we overreacted, when we didn't. I retreated into my house, called my husband, who called the department and reported that a neighbor was shooting a pellet gun at our house and livestock. My husband and I wanted one or two officers to come and talk to the neighbor about it because we didn't feel safe doing that ourselves. The dispatcher told the troopers it was two neighbors shooting at each other... not our exaggeration at all. And an army of policemen showed up looking for action. It's unfortunate really. The only thing we may have going for us is that we don't talk over them and swear. But really, I'm not that excited about having to call the station anytime in the future. We feel pretty let down.

I'm sorry I really do understand. Unlucky circumstances can get the eyerolling directed the wrong way.

I even get the police point of view. They are doing a stressful dangerous job that goes from snooze to life or death in an instant, they have to specialize in quick decisions and trust their judgment. I maintain friendships with some at the local barracks, they just don't advertise that.

On the other hand, I sure enjoy having a camera in my chicken coop, so nice to check them from inside on cold days!

Sounds super Posh! I'm going to be looking for a camera system very soon. Someone made some recommendations but I'll have to go back and search for those. I will be perusing Amazon today in fact.

Have you tried the state police?
Maybe state laws would get you further,,,

Yes. We have someone in our church who is state police and he actually came out when my coop was getting riddled with pellets. However, he had to sit back and let the borough police handle it. His taking charge in that situation would have caused a power rift between state and local, which he knows better than to do. He is filing our pictures/evidence with the state police for us, so when next time comes around, and it's on state police watch, they have everything they need.

I'm happy to hear this.
