Hey, just wanted to post a quick note about my rooster box that i think is a real success. I live in a somewhat dense part of Oakland, CA, very much an urban environment, and there is a town ordinance against roosters.

I have a pullet that turned up a roo and wanted to keep him to breed with my flock of 12 hens, so I ended up making a little "vault" with 5 bales of hay. Two on the ground, parallel to eachother, with one cut in half and the halves placed between those two, to make a "box" in the middle, then two more bales on top, a piece of tin for a roof, and a pipe inserted between the bales for air . I just put him in there at night and slide the top bale over to lock him in, and let him out around 9:30 or so. It seems to be working famously. He still crows in the morning, but you can only hear it if you're standing right next to the vault. I've talked to all my neighbors and they're happy, so I think it's going to be a sustainable system.

Nice, I would love to see a picture of the vault. I think a lot of people could use this in a pinch.

Sounds like you may be ok. I don't know what your individual circumstances are but what do you plan to do if you go out of town for a weekend or a weeklong vacation?
