Straw vs grass

So is this the coop or the run? Do you have a suspended coop? I have a pole style breeding coop that is off the ground, and is dirt and grass underneath. Is the coop mobile? Because if it isn't, and the house is right on the grass, it won't last very long. Chickens like grass. Straw rots easy and is combustible if not kept turned over, if it starts composting. It can spontaneously bursti to flames. That's how oneof my grandma's barns burned down. If you need bedding, sand or pine shavings are a good choice. If the coop is mobile on the grass, move it around every day or every other day. Grass is great, but remember to provide grit for birds that have access to pasture, otherwise they won't be able to digest it very well.

In my chicken tractors it is just grass and the chickens love it. They get to eat the bugs too!

Straw will only auto ignite in very large piles or bales that have got wet and are composting in perfectly ideal situations, if used for simple ground cover there is about zero risk of spontaneous ignition, as it lacks depth of insulation required to maintain and drive up the composting heat...
