You need to get your facts...........German Shepherd , were use by SHEPHERDS to guard their flock from Wolvies , and yes to herd the sheep also.


To all your list above a LGD is not a BREED or type of DOG...rat terrier is a breed not a job ,the rat killing was his job.,and yes other dogs can do his job. Just like a mixed breed can herd sheep.

More than one breed are known to do the job of guarding livestock. Nobody call it a Akbash ,or Great Pyrenees, just that it does job as livestock guarding.

The term LGD does in fact refer to certain breeds of dogs.

The fact that you can train some other breeds to SIMULATE that behavior doesn't change reality.
Most dogs exhibit some territorial protectivness, and many mistake that for "guardian" behavior

A mixed breed isn't born with the INSTINCT to do a job.

That is what seperates the real thing from the mutts

You can drive a KIA in counterclockwise circles, but that won't make you a NASCAR racer.

Let's say that instead of Maggie, I had a Great Pyrenees. Let's say that instead of guarding/ protecting the chickens, the sheep, etc. from predators, it killed them instead. [We've all read on here a thread of someone's GP or other supposed usual, typical LGD breed doing this.] Bear Foot Farm would say even if the GP turns out to kill all your livestock, by definition, it is still a LGD and you can call it such -- it is just one that kills the chickens instead of protecting them. I would have to go along with deerman and say, it is a Great Pyrenees but such a dog is not a LGD.

So, a GP is a LGD the moment it is born whether or not it ever does the job/function???

How about rather than getting hung up on technicalities, instead we rejoice with OP that they got a couple of good dogs out of the deal that will guard their chickens and property. Honestly, some things aren't worth arguing about....

Great dog! Hooray for rescue and I'm so glad you got her spayed. I agree that she's a GSD mix.

My understanding is that LSD is a job, not a breed classification. I have an LSD who is a spaniel/hound mix, so technically she's a hunting dog, but she makes a darn good LSD.

You were drawn to this dog and her puppies when she was in a desperate situation. You spent time and energy to care for her and earn her trust- all the while preparing for a move- WOW!

You deserve this great dog, so glad that you shared the longer version of the story!!

Now...I just wish the pregnant stray cat I adopted recently (got shots, adopted out her kittens, spayed her) had turned out to be a LGD.....she stalks my chickens and the interplay is hilarious!!
oh well, she's a sweet little grey tabby!
