Stray Hen

There are many other options in trying to find the owner....but I can tell you do not care to do that. Sometimes they get chased by a predator etc etc...Ever lose a dog??? I have the dog did not choose to leave. A accident tore down our fence my dog freaked. I love my chickens as I do all my pets. At this time doing the right thing (or trying to) is a mute issue.
As I mentioned before, I followed the hen one time and she slept on a tree. I don't know if she belonged to a coop at one point and I don't even know which neighbor has a coop. I've seen her running around around midnight multiple times, which leads me to believe that she's a stray (hence the thread title.)

I can’t believe your encouraging a guy who has two jobs to go and hatch more chickens. That it’s okay to leave them during vacation (yes you NEED someone to at minimum check on them). According to him he lives in LA not sure at all about the laws of keeping them. Coop? It infuriates me. No one talks about being a responsible chicken owner. So many animals pay the price of ignorance (just not knowing). Shamo this is Not directed at you whatsoever. I know you’re a hatchaholic (lol)
oh yeah I forgot “it’s justa chicken”
encouragement without responsibility just rubs me the wrong way.

For the record I'm just trying to learn as much as possible about raising chicken because there are chicks that might hatch in 16 days or so. I'm not going to buy eggs to hatch, so if these eggs from the hen hatch then fine. If they don't, I hope the hen will break out of her broody mood. if not, i did a research on how to break that and will try that if i need to.

Mr. Strayhen. My frustration is simple and I will leave it in Gods hands. Learn how to take care of the hen first. Before you go much further (baby chicks). Her basic needs. A quality chicken feed. Clean fresh water. Shelter. I’m frustrated because I believe you were overwhelmed with information about her brooding eggs. In this case the Chicken came before the egg. Learn to swim before you jump into the lake. Who knows this could lead you down a road that is the start of being the best chicken keeper ever and you might develop a passion. My best wishes for you and the little hen.

Unfortunately I have 2 jobs so I'm quite busy and don't have the time to go knock on each door to see if they are missing a chicken. I doubt people would want me to knock on their doors at 11pm when I get home either.

Also there's no guarantee that someone won't claim they lost a chicken even though they didn't. BTW, if the chicken decided to leave the home, do they have a right to move out or do they belong to the owner? =)

Livestock and pets belong to the owner. Of course common sense must prevail, and there is responsibility on both sides of the fence. If a stray dog or chicken showed up in my yard, I would not assume that it now belongs to me b/c it's in my possession. I would be obligated to at least let the ACO know about the situation, perhaps the local animal shelters, and put up a sign at the end of my road, perhaps ask a few neighbors. Word of mouth travels well in my neighborhood, especially if I talk to the "walkers". They are always out walking, and know everybody. As for owner responsibility: keep your pets at home. But accidents do happen. I would be beyond shocked if my dog ended up in some one else's yard b/c her E collar malfunctioned, and they decided to keep her!

That chicken looks like a game chicken, and is most likely ferral.

If shes gone broody, she won't break unless you break her or she gets chicks. I sugest buying a batch of fertile eggs and sticking them under her.

Please don't do so, unless you are equipped with a predator proof coop and run, and are ready, willing, and able to take on ownership of a flock of chickens, including seeing to it that some one can tend them during your 2 week vacation.
