Stray Hen

If you have skunks, you have raccoons. In LA, you also have coyotes. Yes you do, even if you don't see them. That hen is at great risk setting on the ground in your yard. Please move her to a safe place, in the garage or even in your house, while you research care and secure coop building. If you can't, and it sounds like you are really busy, do the right thing and take her to the animal shelter or a rescue. And stop feeding the cats outside, that draws skunks and raccoons.
I only put out food in the morning and only enough so that the cats finish them off by sunset. One of the stray cat is a cripple that lives beneath my cars in the car port. I don't think it would survive without the food.

Strayhen...... are you allowed roosters there where you live? There's a cute little rooster in need of re-homing in the re-homing section of this site, Title of thread is : 9.5 week old Blue Gold Partridge Brahma Rooster needs a new home!

Roosters are allowed in my zone. If the hen does hatch chicks then I would get a coop for them. But would a newly introduced rooster hurt chicks?

Have you taken a look at him? He's only 9.5 weeks old, still very young and will easily integrate without too much trouble. Plus those fluffy chickens are not known to be too aggressive..... you should pick him up.

I've seen the thread, he is a beautiful boy! I would highly recommend checking Craigslist for a second hand coop, you might find something great. If not then you could make one or buy a new one. If buying a new one I can recommend Omlet coops, great quality, attractive coops. A little on the pricey side though.

Would you like to candle your eggs to see if a chick is developing? Just use your phone flashlight and shine it into the blunt end, if you see veins then you've got chicks!

Yes I would love to check. So do I just wear some gloves and pick up the Hen and put her aside? Is she going to attack me?

I'm still not very sure I want to start my own chicken coop unless if chicks are going to hatch, then I feel responsible to care for them. So we'll see.

Wear a long sleeved shirt and gloves if you would like, the hen will likely try to peck you. Whilst candling I would recommend putting her in a box or cat carrier, as I find it stresses them out if they can see you messing with their eggs.Wash your hands before candling, and pick the eggs up one at a time, with a soft pillow underneath in case you drop them. It would be great for us to see some pictures! Good luck, and be careful :)
