We had a lot of work to do today in the garage where she is staying so the light was on for a while. She layed an egg, soft shell like usually. It broke and she ate it, I found the shell. The best part is, it stayed inside! I'm still going to keep her inside for two more days or so just to be sure. But it stayed inAwesome! I give them layer mix and oyster shells. When we make eggs i give them the shells too! She lost her butt feathers this winter and has been trying to grow them back but the other girls kept pecking them out. Once the grass showed again and the snow melted, i let them free range. Since then her shells got harder and the other girls stopped pecking her. I think the pecking was because of boredom. I'm going to let her and the rest of the flock free range tomorrow for a while. Hopefully that keeps helping. I do it a little bit every day. It's good that she laid an egg w/o prolapsing. I wonder if her soft shell eggs are the reason she is prolapsing, they are probably harder to pass since they are flexible. I don't know what you give your birds for calcium. If you feed high protein, it probably only contains 1% calcium, whereas a layer feed contains about 4%. Even at 4% laying hens could use more! Oyster shell or crushed egg shells is a good source of extra calcium. If you are already feeding free choice oyster shell plus what is in your feed, that hen may have a calcium absorption problem. There are soluble calcium supplements for hens with this condition. It can take as little as a week to correct the deficiency or she may need help more often. You'll have to assess the shells of your other hens, the calcium content of your feed and whether or not you are giving enough extra calcium options for them.![]()

Yes, it was such a hard winter, I had a few girls with bare butts too. No soft shell eggs though. I tried to keep them busy and they went out in extreme temps even, but the butt picking persisted. Now that the snow is gone, they have other things to do besides feather picking! Maybe your hen is just having a production glitch and her eggs will return to normal soon. If not, you can always give her the supplement.![]()
I keep meaning to give you an update so here it is! Yesterday at 3:30 in the afternoon we put her back with the flock! She did great and got back up to the leader rather quickly! It is still in and everyone gets along one day later! Thank you so much for all your help! I'm so happy I joined this four years ago! It is extremely helpful! Any problems I have I immediately come here. Thank you all again!
Well, today our baby sat in the nesting box for over three hours. She never layed, only rubber eggs. She did this before the issue as well. She made her egg song but it was not an egg, but a funny looking poop. It looks like her vent "extras" pooped out. Hopefully this will now lead to nice, shelled eggs. She never sits in the nesting box to poop, and this one is extremely funny looking. We will hope for the best!Excellent!! I'm glad she is doing so well! Don't forget to always keep a special eye on her.![]()
