Stupid loose dogs...didn't get my chickens, but they did get my goats!

I am so sorry for your loss.

. The paint ball idea is wonderful I think. I live in an area where my chickens are in my fenced back yard. Loose dogs just make me angry!

I would suggest hotwire, at least for a nighttime paddock. You can't very well stand guard 24/7 with a gun, and it's difficult to make a fence that a determined dog can't climb over or dig under. Also even if you can get rid of these dogs, there'll be more, unfortunately...

We hotwired our chicken pen after our dog learned how to climb over and play with the chickens. He touched it once, and immediately lost all interest in climbing!

I am sorry for this horrific event you have been through.

SSS and get a baby monitor. They will be back. I have a baby monitor. And I can hear anything and everything for my goats, chickens, and guinea's. You have been through hell and back. I hope you find out who these dogs belong to and they have to pay for what their dogs have done. No it will not bring them back but maybe it will teach the owners to keep their dogs home.

since ive started backyard chicken it has made me hate alot of things this post is making me hate dogs how horrible i feel so sorry for you and i hope you find the owner and get everything replaced!

Aren't donkey's good guard animals? I would have gotten help too. Dogs can and do attack
people. When I was a teenager I chased a big dog that had one of my chickens in his mouth
through the woods barefoot in the middle of the night all the way to where he lived. Now I would get a
weapon and make sure another person was alerted. I've seen some very dangerous dogs,
google some images of what kind of damage a pitbull can do to your face. As for the dogs that attacked
your goats I would set out a bait goat and wait for them with a loaded gun.

oh my gosh!!!
i am so sorry!!! my goats are out in the open all the time if that happen to me i would be sooo devistated!!
that is just horrable!! i am so very sorry!! im surprised you didnt get a gun and go dog hunting that night!!
once my neighbors dogs kept killing my chickens (i was lucky and acually seen them) i took my dead chicken and brought it over to my neighbor like a mad crazy woman and yelled at them.. thats all it took they dont let thier dogs out with out them anymore.
but it took 12 turkeys (5 months old) and 23 chickens later (almost laying) .. (i didnt know what was killing them)
maybe the owner of the dogs doesnt know the dog is like this.. i hope you find them.
oh my heart just sinks for you!!
if you dont mind me asking what kind of goats.

Sorry..I'm replying to everything on one post because I'm on my phone. First..it was the middle of the night. I was not going anywhere near 2 strange dogs alone. So, yes I got my brother. The dogs weren't after the goats when I spotted them. They were trying their best to get out of there. The goats were on the opposite side of the pen 100 feet away. I was on the back porch another 100 or more feet away. At that point I hadn't even discovered that they attacked anyone yet. I just wanted them out.
To the poster who pointed out the lighting issue..thank you. We hadn't even considered that. I'll have to figure something out. Maybe a light that I can turn on from the house.
My dad is loaning us a gun and we're probably going to buy a .22 from my bil when they come visit at christmas.
We're also going to run hotwire at the top and bottom of the fence and start looking for a LGD.
The goats were mostly pygmy/nigerian with one nubian doe, one nubian/boar doe and one nubian/boar buck.
Thanks again for the advice and support ya'll.

you're welcome, it gets darn dark out where we are and floods that illuminate the night pens were a priority for us. especially nice if you can both see the night pen and switch the lights without leaving the house... in our case we have to go outside to see the whole night pen. in addition it's really flat here, so if I were shooting a predator at night, I'd have to really watch where my down range is.

sounds like you've got a good plan.
the LGD will be a big factor, once they're mature enough to do the job... everyone I know who has them has had no losses since getting them. they're an effective solution. the electric fence works well with roaming dogs, but sometimes feral dogs or coyotes figure out how to dig under or jump over.
