Stupid people with stupid dogs - no animals harmed or killed

AMEN!!

And that applies to chickens as well as to dogs. I am sometimes amazed at the people who complain about dogs on their property, but who nonetheless think it's just fine and dandy when chickens wander over to the neighbors' garden.

I completely agree. PEOPLE DON"T WANT YOUR ANIMALS! At school we used to be allowed to eat outside. Well 1 day a pair of large dogs came by. I don't know them so i just chased them off. (not knowing if they were food aggressive or not) People shamed me for it. Many people think i hate dogs now just because i didn't feel like sharing my lunch with some strangers uncontrollable animal.
I do sometimes walk my dog around with out a leash, but when i whistle she comes back. If a dog attacks her (the brave thing she is) runs to me and sits on my foot, leaning against my legs. I then get to smack/kick whatever is attacking. fun eh?

Glad you ratted the dimbulb out FastChick...it was her own danged fault that her dog got killed...it was off leash..tough cookies.
I'm now having a problem with Obelisk getting out of the yard...I found where she was squeezing under the fence, but now I have to figure out whether she's found another spot to go under or she's just flying over...THAT is MY responsibility as a pet chicken owner...And she's on a leash whenever she goes anywhere...

I was out walking my German Shepherd, on a leash, when these punk kids came walking down the street, , using profanity 'stupid white b*****, and my dog stayed between me and these troublemakers, until one kid says, will that dog bite me? and I answered, He'll tear your face off if I tell him to, do you want me to tell him ? of course, my dear Andy, obligingly , showed his teeth, and did that bottom of the chest growl thing, and the boys left without any further ado. I took my Andy inside and gave him treats, and we snuggled on the floor. Little did those kids know it was all for show. The dog slept with me , and was just a 110# lap dog !

I would have cooked him a steak that night. A dog that knows its place in the pack and duty to it, is a great thing.

Mine have backed several unwanted late night guests off the property and have been rewarded well for doing their duty.

My general opinion on the topic is, I'll keep my animals on my property and fence accordingly to see that happens, you do the same and all is well. Although I will admit to overkill on the fencing and housing of my animals to try to ensure they are as safe as I can make it for them. Knowing that many others do not keep animals under control has meant taking extra precautions to protect my own animals.

I still personally feel that "all" dog owners should have to train their dogs to a reasonable level of obedience, and keep them under control or lose the privilege of owning them. As much as I hate regulations that restrict, I have to say that mandatory training of dogs and their owners would make everyones life a lot easier.

I have six dogs. Not one of them, nor any dog I have had in the past, has EVER been on anyone else's property without permission. Nor have I ever allowed them to interact with people or dogs who do not want to do so.

I, too, have been on the other end of the leash when we encounter loose dogs. As a child, I had one of my cats killed by two dogs who were not obeying the leash law. Mind you, the cat was killed in our own fenced back yard by dogs from across the street.

My dogs do agility, obedience, rally obedience, herding, backpacking, draft work, are therapy dogs, and they all get a walk every day. Not every dog has to do all those things, but they do need to have interaction, rules, consistency, and attention.

Nothing irritates me more than people who are irresponsible about their dogs - partly because it makes my life more difficult, partly because it puts my dogs at risk, partly because their dogs aren't happy - but mostly because people like that are why my well behaved, well trained, well socailized dogs are not welcome in so many places.

Also it's why so many breeds are discriminated against - we were once declined for homeowner's insurance because a Doberman we had at the time had the audacity to bark when the guy pulled into the driveway to check out the house. She stopped when we came outside, and went and lay by the porch and went to sleep, but he said in his report that he felt she was dangerous.

I'm glad to find that BYC has so many responsible dog owners with such self control and tact in our midst!

Just as a note: my chickens are also kept in a secure coop - besides the local hawks, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, my well behaved dogs do have limits. But the difference is, I know what those limits are!!!

And would Obelisk be a chicken or a dog? And is it the chicken or the dog who's flying over the fence? And which one is on the leash when she goes anywhere???

I am having a very good time visualizing all these possibilities!!!

Obelisk is my 5 year old dippy Leghorn hen...
I wish I could have a dog, but I'm allergic and we're not around enough to socialize one correctly if we did, sigh...
Obelisk has a purple adjustable cat harness that she wears when I take her out to the petshops.

I take my dogs everywhere I can for socialization, and my 120+ pound Newfoundlands always get a lot of attention - but I bet you get even more, walking in with a chicken on a leash with a purple harness! I'd love to see it - and good for you, being a chicken ambassador! You should contact local schools and do visits like I do with my dogs, talking about chickens, proper care, and what great pets they make!
