I don't think so, I wouldn't worry over a garter snake. I have caught a rat snake trying to get in my brooder pen once, I'm sure he would have done some damage.

It is a VERY rare garter snake that gets big enough to even think about eating a chick. Their natural diet is very different..fish and frogs are their favorites. In captivity, it is really hard to convince most of them to even touch a mouse.lol So, no, I wouldn't worry about anything but the chickens killing the helpless snake. And, speaking from experience, most garter snakes, when picked up, prefer to poop in order to scare you away. Some will bite, but it does not hurt at all. Of course, they are not venomous, and have very small teeth and wimpy jaws.

Probably because it was terrified because the chickens were trying to eat it.

Scared snakes hiss because they cannot scream, growl, bark, squawk, etc. They really are incredibly defenseless and coming up short in the useable threat department.

If it's a garter snake, I'd be concerned for the poor little snake... Your chickens might do this to it...
