Substrate cleaning

Ive seen a few threads on the various substrates people use but I wanted to probe a little deeper.

My duck pen to house them over night is just basically mud. Their pond is in the pen as is their "coop" . It's a sod to clean out or even go and fetch eggs.

What substrate do you use and how do you go about the cleaning process? Ideally I could do with something i can hose down and doesnt need replacing too often. The coop I use straw, which the love and Im happy with that.

The best way i found to keep my ducks from living in mud holes was to put their pool on a hardwarecloth covered platform that drained out of the pen. If u built an inground pond u might use like river rock around it. Then the mud hole pen id fill with layers of whatever i coud find, leaves, cut grass, dirt and probly some pine shavings to fill it all in and help it dry out. When ive done this it all composts and becomes dirt in 6 months u can dig in the area and it packed hard black soil w just a few pine shavings visible.
