After doing a flock check, discovered 2 of our birds had severe bumblefoot. Both birds are 1 1/2 years old. After doing some research, a friend suggested we follow the instructions from The Chicken Chick for treatment. https://the-chicken-chick.com/bumblefoot-causes-treatment-warning/

With her instructions for the surgical removal, we successfully completed the procedure on both birds. As she noted it is very taxing and emotionally challenging so taking a break to breathe did help.

Both birds did extremely well given they had no pain meds prior to the surgery. I did not give aspirin prior as it's a blood thinner. They would occasionally flinch but otherwise didn't move.

I'll follow up with post surgery status and photos in another post in a few days.

I've attached pictures but note they are GRAPHIC PHOTOS so be warned! 20200114_163328.jpg 20200114_163333.jpg 20200114_163336.jpg 20200114_163350.jpg 20200114_163413.jpg 20200114_164626.jpg 20200114_164640.jpg 20200114_164716.jpg Resized_20200114_172514_8822.jpeg Resized_20200114_172608_7803.jpeg Resized_20200114_175351_5962.jpeg Resized_20200114_175355_5464.jpeg Resized_20200114_180613_4957.jpeg Resized_20200114_180624_4414.jpeg Resized_20200114_180628_3718.jpeg Resized_20200114_181222_9862.jpeg Resized_20200114_182223_9088.jpeg Resized_20200114_184659_8380.jpeg Resized_20200114_185937_7484.jpeg Resized_20200114_190915_5528.jpeg

That's amazing! I had to deal with horrible bumble on my rescue duck.. Got so bad that it difformed his leg in a way it twisted back (He held it like that because it hurt him to walk like that, He also had puss in his upper leg) Bumble is horrible to deal with.
Honestly, after 3 months, My duck is still healing, and still needs antibiotics.
I'm glad the surgery went well with your chickens, I hope they heal up quickly :D

Here are pictures 48 hours after surgery. The first two photos are the top and bottom of the bird that had a total of 4 bumbles on one single foot. The last two photos are of the bird that had the single large bumble growing out on each foot.

No sign of secondary infection on any wound. Each wound was sprayed with Vetricin, dried, covered with triple antibiotic ointment and a 2x2 non-stick gauze pad and wrapped with 3-4 strips of Vetwrap. Next bandage change will be in 2 days.

Nice set up you did! That will be very helpful! Great job with the pics too, you really captured the essence of bumblefoot! Thanks for sharing!

I'm glad you found it helpful! It is definitely not something I want to do again anytime soon! The first bird with the 4 bumbles on the one foot was the worst! Sadly her entire foot was pretty much infected.

I've done quite a few bumblefoot surgeries and it looks like you did a great job.
Lowering roosts inside coops, using sandpaper to remove burrs and splinters on roosts and removing high places where birds can jump down from in your yard will help reduce or eliminate bumblefoot issues.
