In my mixed flock I suddenly found purple eggs. This is an established pen...no one has been added in over a year. I have 1 ee that lays a blueish egg shown. Here is the first picture...

I have black copper marans in the pen. A friend said that she found a purpleish egg in her bcm pen today. This got me thinking. What if there is something on my egg? So I wet the egg and it turned chocolaty brown. THEN, as it dried it turned purple again. Is there something missing from her diet to cause this? I wet a patch on the egg for you to see.

If this is her first time laying, give her some time to work out the kinks out of her laying system before you would have that nice gloss on that brown egg!

that is what is called a "bloom" and it's just an extra thick layer of the protein that protects the egg from bacterial contamination. healthy girl! my FCBms occasionally lay this type of egg.

I want purple eggs too! I just have green and one "pink". Purple would be a splendid addition!
