Sudden Death [Update] - Coughing and Heavy Breathing

What about those black flies everyone talks about that are so awful? Do ya'll have those? Of course we can guess all day, just hope the vet can give you some answers.
I thought about that too. Leucocytozoon, right? We do have black flies in Maine, but we are on the coast, where they are not much of an issue. We have noticed they are worse this year than most years, but they are by no means "bad."

You just have to be careful handling them if their crops are full of water. I've had them aspirate water from carrying them, but never enough to kill them, so I doubt this is what happened. When it happens here I usually notice that they start open mouth breathing, gurgling and coughing, but they usually cough up the water in 30 minutes or less. This issue with the crop is why people should never carry their birds upside down by the legs.

I am so sorry for your loss! While it is not much consolation, I am glad you were with him when we went. Seems comforting somehow.

Please do keep us posted on whether you're able to get a necropsy done.
We agree. I'm glad we were with him. Thank you so much for your kind words.

The state vet is going to take a look at Piglet for us on Monday. I'll update folks here. Thanks again, everyone.

Oh no, I’m so sorry. Rest In Peace little Piglet.
Thank you so much, @DuckGrrrl77 . We took him up to the state vet yesterday for a necropsy, and we'll update folks here on the results. Piglet was an amazing duck and is missed by all. Angus, our other drake, is stepping up, which is sweet to see. Thanks again!
