I too thought I had 9 hens. At about 5 months old my white silkie started making weird noises. We were told that a flock of hens will sometimes cause one hen to take on the role of a rooster with the crowing (just like someone else posted). I thought this was cute - a few weeks later we found out she "was" a he. He was sweet at first, let me bathe and blow dry him. One day I went to pick up one of the hens, she made such a fuss, Fernando came from no where, bit my hand and ran away but kept his eye on me. He can still be aggressive at times. I'm not afraid of him, he will butt up against the back of my leg (I always wear pants), I turn and he will walk away. I never run or go at him. My husband grabs him and holds him and tells all the hens Fernando is not a tough guy - he tries to embarrass him and it appears to work. Anyway, I hate to hear of chickens being made stew and always hope there is a way for a rooster to somehow calm down. If not, I understand.
