Suede Posed for Me Today (PICS), sorry Dialups!

Sorry, I dont ship live birds. I do sell hatching eggs sometimes, though. No, Suede and his ladies don't eat anymore than any other chicken I have here. If he does, it isn't enough to notice. I haven't weighed him in quite awhile. He's 9 months old now, I think, but I know he's probably topped 9 lbs, maybe more. They say the Orpingtons aren't really mature till around 18 months so he has more growing/filling out to do yet. My Barred Rock, Hawkeye, looked big until Suede grew to this age and now he just dwarfs ol' Hawk.

Only 9lbs??? I have one of Suede's siblings here, and I am so impressed by his size. Course, mine is younger than Suede! Speckledhen, what age did your blue orp females start laying? Mine hatched about the 2nd week of May. I have to admit they are the most fantastic looking birds and anyone that sees them just compliments them on color and size! My roo hasn't fully developed his comb and wattles yet and he deigns any interest in the gals right now, but I figure they are slow to mature. I can't wait to have eggs and babies from them.

Well, it could be more than that because I have not weighed him in a long time. He was 8.5 lbs at 18 weeks old, and he's, oh, maybe 36 weeks? I'd have to count again. He was hatched Feb 1 this year. They are impressive birds, aren't they? Velvet started laying at 25 weeks and I thought Skye started at 22 weeks, but it turns out those two eggs were probably Velvet's so Skye's beginning lay date was 24 weeks. Suede's temperament is just amazing and exactly what you want in a rooster of that mass.

WOW! He is stunning! Very impressive bird. Have you ever thought about showing him?

No, I don't want the danger of disease or the hassle of showing. Besides, as handsome as my big boy is, his eyes are a bit too light for the Blue Orpington standard and he'd get a couple of points knocked off for that, at least. My Velvet and Skye both have the proper very dark eyes, though. Actually, Velvet is a better breed example than Suede is and Skye is shaping up nicely, too.
Thanks, Lee! I didn't see your post- I wasn't ignoring you. Yes, Lee has seen my big Suede in person when he came to pick up some pullets from me.
