Sulmtalers Thread

I don't know the answer to that question about wheaten versus gold-duckwing. I was told that the black dots on the gold-duckwing chicks indicates a sex-linked trait. In other words, the ones with the black spots are the males. With the wheaten variety, I think the only way to sex them is wait until the wing feathers start to appear. Not that it matters that much. People looking for Sulmtalers are probably going to want both sexes

DC if the pullets are going to all be the same color as adults then shouldn't you keep them separate so you will not have duck wings breeding with wheatens since you won't be able to tell the difference in the pullets?

Look what came in the mail:

12 Gold Duckwing Sulmtalers from GFF

Now add that to the ones that I hatched last weekend:

9 Wheaten Sulmtalers from Widget Creek Ranch

And my basement is now over-run with little yellow fluffies. Now the real question is whether or not I should keep them separate or make it one big Sulmtaler brooder.
oooh! I hate to admit it, but I am absolutely overcome with jealousy.
I'm still learning about sulmtalers - will it be easy to differentiate between gold duckwing and the wheaten?

I only have three wheaten pullets. One started laying a few weeks ago but stopped when it got so cold (-20 and -30 F) and everyone chose to stay in the coop. I'm guessing it is too much commotion for her to lay, and her sisters haven't started yet either.

Still saving my pennies to be able to get a rooster this spring!

I am going to put colored zip ties on for now and keep them all together due to the lack of coops. I will separate them into breeding groups in spring/summer pens later. But I keep going back and forth on this since I did not vaccinate the ones I hatched for Meraks. The ones from GFF are vaccinated. I don't know if you can mix vaccinated and non-vaccinated chicks. Does anyone have any experience for this before I mix them?

Wheaten genetics have a multitude of options. Here are a few recipes:

- BB red male (wheaten) x silver wheaten female= 100% gold duckwing males, 100% wheaten females

- Gold duckwing male x silver wheaten female= 50% gold duckwing males, 50% BB red males, 50% wheaten females, 50% silver wheaten females

- Silver duckwing male x wheaten female = 100% gold duckwing males, 100% silver wheaten females

- Gold duckwing male x "gold" wheaten female= 50% gold duckwing males, 50% wheaten males, 50% silver females, 50% wheaten females

One can create blue golden duckwings and blue silver duckwings...just add blue. (Bl)

Also, Pyle if there is dominant white in the mix.
