Do you mean cottonwood trees? Our poplars are all hybrids and don't produce anything other than lots of leaves in the fall...
I have belonged to the arbor day foundation since 2006 and every single tree they have ever sent has died. So I don't think I'll be renewing my subscription--I think I've single-handedly killed about 350 trees from them, LOL They either are shipped at the wrong time of year (too hot or the ground is still frozen) and/or they send trees based on our zip code which is 98840 and that's at 600-800' elevation and IN TOWN. We're out of town 15+ miles and at 2500' elevation.
That is too bad about your trees dying from the arbor day society. We have 10 and all are thriving and we live in an old dirt pit. The soil is real bad.
Only one type around here has the fuzz. Might be cottonwood there. Another name here.
The list of trees in Maine are these:
# Poplar, Balm-of-Gilead
# Poplar, Balsam-> cottonwood
# Poplar, Lombardy
# Poplar, Silver
# Poplar, White
# Poplar, Yellow
Here is what i dug up.
The poplar non fuzz kind are off the big roots. I think they are either white or silver poplar. They are not seedlings. I am not sure how yours grow but here it is almost impossible to get one from the ground. I broke off a couple off a root and have them in water. Will see if anything develops. Are you interested in cedar? I have one of those that is about a foot in length. Maple? Ash? Beech? Black Locust? If your interested in any of those I will add them in. I don't really think the poplar will make it. No roots of their own. They are all on the main tree roots. The bugs this year has been awful.
Just a note for blue spruce:
Have you had your soil tested for Ph? Soil must be at least moderately acidic. If the soil is basic the trees will not do good at all.
